Wave fall to 0-2 on the season
By George Starks
GREENVILLE- With two games in the 2012 football season, Greenville
football coach Aaron Schaffer is still looking for his first varsity
football victory.
After opening the season on the road at Eaton and a 47-6 loss to the
Eagles, coming home to the friendly confines of Harmon Field would
hopefully prove to be a better result.
That wasn't the case for the Wave.
A week ago, Tipp City put a 62-7 thumping on Graham and that 55 point
margin of victory remained the same Friday as the Red-Devils rolled to
a 55-0 victory over Greenville.
It was a night when about the only thing that went right for Greenville
was taking the opening kick-off.
After that, it was all Tipp City.
After Greenville went three and out on the opening possession, Tipp put
six on the board on just three plays. Taking the ball on the Wave 31,
the short drive was capped off by a 19 yard scoring run from junior
Jacob Hall and a 7-0 lead.
After another three and out possession, Tip took control of the ball at
their own 38 yard line. Again, three plays later, the Red-Devils put
the ball over the line on a one yard scamper by Hall. The 62 yard drive
was highlighted by a 61 yard rush by Cameron Johnson on the second play
from scrimmage.
By the end of the opening 12 minutes of play, Tipp was up by a 21-0
count and held a commanding 42-0 lead at the half.
At that point, the only thing left to be determined was the final score.
"I told the kids at half-time that I knew only one way to coach and one
way to play and that was to give it your best all the time," said
Schaffer. "I told them to stand as tall as you can, as proud as you can
and be willing to work and willing to get better because I know myself
and the coaching staff is going to continue to coach. We have to get
better. There are no ifs, ands or buts about it."
Whatever it was the Schaffer said at the half was enough to spark the
Wave defense as Greenville kept Tipp out of the end-zone in the third
quarter before allowing two scores in the final frame.
With mistakes taking its toll on the Wave offense, Schaffer says it's
more than just turnovers.
"We have things we need to work on and it's not just one thing," said
Schaffer. "It's not just the kids and not just the coaching staff but a
variety of things and we all have to work to improve. You can be a 10-0
team and if your mind set is that everything is fine, then you will
never get better and you're doing the wrong things. We are going to
work and get better, and eventually the ball will start bouncing our
way."
Greenville (0-2) will host Lebanon next Friday.
