Butler defense and special teams the difference

GREENVILLE - While all teams want to win, there are special nights when
a victory means everything. One of those nights is homecoming.
Friday, Greenville welcomed in Butler and the Aviators were not
gracious guests.
On a night when everything that could go wrong for Greenville did, it
was the Aviators that destroyed the Wave homecoming, dropping a 39-0
loss on Greenville.
Things looked good for the Wave right from the beginning as Butler
would fumble the opening kick-off. The Wave would recover and go to
work from the Aviator 37. Two plays later, the Aviators picked off a
pass from freshman Clay Guillozet and return it to the Wave 26.
That would prove to be the beginning of the end for Greenville.
Even though Butler would turn the ball over on downs, the interception
would eventually set the tone for a Greenville disaster.
After a three and out by the Wave, Butler’s Airion Kosak would rumble
48 yards for the score on the first play from scrimmage at the 5:18
mark of the frame, giving Butler the only score it would need on the
night and a 6-0 lead after the PAT was blocked.
“We felt good coming into the game,” said Wave coach Aaron Schaffer.
“On film, we thought we matched up well. Early on, we had problems with
the special team.”
With 2:22 remaining in the first, Butler would find pay dirt again on a
blocked punt that senior Jordan Messenger would take in from 48 yards
out.
By the end of the opening quarter, Butler held a 19-0 advantage after
Kosak would run in a 54 yard punt return with 1:07 remaining.
With the first 12 minutes in the books, the visitors would put 14 more
points on the board before the break and a commanding 33-0 lead.
“We gave up long runs, long returns, we gave up a block and an on-sides
on us,” said Schaffer. “There’s something in that arena that we have to
get fixed. We have worked hard on it and will continue to work on it.”
Greenville, 1-5, will travel to Trotwood next week.
