girls soccer woes continue
Sidney drops 10-0 loss on Lady Wave
By George Starks
GREENVILLE- The Sidney Lady Yellow Jackets came into Greenville looking
to make an improvement on their GWOC soccer record.
Greenville was looking to get its first win of the season.
It didn't take the Lady Jackets long to make it known they would not be
denied. It took Sidney less than two minutes to take the lead as Sidney
rolled to a 10-0 GWOC North victory Monday.
Sidney's Morgan Nasal accounted for three of the Jackets goals, all in
the first half as Sidney held a commanding 6-0 lead at the break.
"The girls told me they had a mental lapse in the first half," said
Wave coach Justin Gonzalez before the start of the second half. "They
assured me, things would be better in the second half."
The Wave kept their promise to Gonzalez.
Despite giving up four more goals, two by Lauren Boyd, the Wave showed
more passion and hustle in the final 40 minutes, playing team soccer.
"It took us a little bit of time to start playing like a team," said
Gonzalez after the game. "We made some little steps tonight and that's
what it's going to take. When you have kids that literally have never
played together, it's going to take time for us to come together. I
told them it might take 10 games before we start clicking but once we
start clicking, everyone's going to start seeing an improvement and
that's what matters."
Coming in at 4-2, the Jackets showed why they sport a positive record
in a tough conference.
"They have a great feeder system," said Gonzalez. "We have a feeder
program here, Darke County Soccer, and that's a huge part of what comes
up here at the high school level. We need to support Darke County
soccer."
On the Wave keeper, Shanelle Smith recorded a ton of saves. Even though
10 got by her, Gonzalez was more than pleased with her efforts.
"She has done an amazing job," said Gonzalez. "She stepped in for our
original keeper and has done an unbelievable job. I can't complain
about how she has stepped up and taken control."
Coming off the field after the final buzzer, tears fell from the faces
of many Wave players as emotions were running rampant.
"These kids have a passion for soccer," Gonzalez pointed out. "I've
played soccer most of my life and I can't tell you how many games I
walked off the field crying. It's just the fight in them because they
want to accomplish something. Sometimes when you don't accomplish what
you want, you will get upset about it. It's just passion."
Greenville, 0-8, will host Xenia (Varsity Only) on Saturday starting at
2 p.m.
