Wave netters at 12-2 for season
Lady Wave
declaw Wildcats

GREENVILLE- In a phone conversation with Jim Koontz recently, the Lady
Wave tennis coach said there would be no more cupcakes on the schedule
for his team after defeating Wayne and Piqua in easy fashion earlier in
the week.
Thursday, the Wave netters welcomed the Springfield Wildcats and a
clash between the GWOC North leaders (Greenville) and one of the best
from the GWOC Central (Springfield).
On this night, give the nod to the Wave in a tight 3-2 classic on the
courts.
With the first doubles team of Alexis Medley and Madison Bixler losing
to the team from Springfield 5-7, 3-6, Greenville's first singles
player, junior Sophia Navas-Davis, got Greenville even when she got a
victory over Nicole Palvlatos in two sets, 7-6, 6-3.
After that, the younger of the sisters, Raquel Navas-Davis, went the
distance with Nasasha Neched, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.
That victory gave the Wave a 2-1 lead in the match but Greenville
needed one more win to clinch the match for the team.
On court two was junior Michelle Borgerding who was going toe to toe
with Sasha Kahn.
On court six, were the second doubles team of Kirby Lance and Holly
Cameron.
That duo was in a fight of their own with Springfield's Nadia Syed and
Sasasha Ranginwaly
In the end, it was Borgerging that won the crucial match, topping her
opponent in two sets to remain undefeated on the season (14-0), 7-5,
6-0.
"Springfield is a really good team," said Koontz. "They came in here
with just two losses on the year (15-2). One loss was to Cincinnati
Ursline and the other to Beavercreek. This team is battle tested. We
always seem to play this team close. We squeaked by them this year so
it was no exception."
It would prove to be a night when the three singles teams would be
pushed as one player would go three sets while the other two would each
play sets that would go an extra game to determine a winner.
"Springfield gave our singles players fits tonight. They really pushed
us," Koontz stated. "Now, we have Xenia coming in Saturday and they
have some very good singles players. So this will not be easy for us
and that's good."
With one team really standing in the way of Greenville and the North
title (Vandalia) Koontz wants that hard competition for his team before
they go to the land of Aviators.
"We have to be ready for Butler," said Koontz. "We will have Sidney
after that but Sidney is down this year. We still can't look past
either one of those two teams. I'm proud of my girls. They work hard."
Greenville will square off with Xenia at 2 p.m. Saturday.
