Butler/Greenville
wage classic battle

VANDALIA - The date was August 28 and the opponent was Troy. The Lady
Wave tennis team and Troy were squaring off at Greenville in a match
that carried a lot of weight in the Greater Western Ohio Conference
North Division.
The winner would have the inside track to the GWOC North title, a title
Greenville won outright a year ago. Greenville won that night, 3-2 and
that would leave one team the Wave would have to beat.
Vandalia-Butler.
The Wave and the Aviators entered Tuesday's match, undefeated in the
North. A year ago, Greenville edged out Butler, 3-2, but that was then.
This is now and the here and now meant a whole new game. This time,
give the edge to Butler. The Lady Aviators turned the tables on
Greenville, outlasting the Wave 3-2 in a classic battle on the courts.
"I've said it before this match could be 3-2 either way," said Wave
coach Jim Koontz. "Last year, it was 3-2 in our favor. Tonight, it was
3-2 for them. We knew coming in, it was all on the line if we were
going to repeat. This was a tough loss."
The Wave started out on a positive note when Raquel Navas-Davis rolled
to a straight set victory in her third singles match 6-0, 6-0.
At that point, the battle was on and things got interesting.
First singles player Sophia Navas-Davis lost 6-2, 6-2 and the second
doubles team of Holly Cameron and Kirby Lantz had went down to defeat
1-6, 6-4, 6-0.
In the mean time, the first doubles team of Alexis Medley and Madison
Bixler had pulled of a 6-4, 7-6 victory, knotting things up at 2-2.
That left things up to junior Michelle Borgerding.
The Greenville second singles player was no stranger to being in the
tie-breaking match. It was just last week in a match with Springfield,
that the Wave junior pulled out a hard fought match win, giving
Greenville the win on that night.
Coming in undefeated with a 15-0 record, Borgerding took the opening
set, 6-1. Never giving up or letting down in her efforts, the Wave
junior lost the second set, 6-4 and eventually falling 6-3 in the
finale.
"Michelle went three sets as did our second doubles team," said Koontz.
"We had our first doubles team won in two and that was a tight one. So
this is what it came down to. Michelle gave it all she had, losing 6-3
in the third set. We play a very competitive schedule and that was a
see-saw match all the way."
Now 13-3 overall and 3-1in the North, Greenville can share the North
Division crown three ways if Troy can upend Butler. A Trojan win would
give Greenville, Troy and Butler one loss each and a three way tie for
the conference crown.
A Butler win over Troy and the Aviators win the title outright.
Greenville still has Sidney left to play in north competition.
