ANSONIA- Coming in with a meager 1-3 mark, the Ansonia Lady Tigers
softball team was in a much needed win situation. The Tigers got
that win Thursday with a 5-0 victory over Ft. Recovery.
“We played well tonight,” said Ansonia coach Floyd Jenkins. “Catey
(Fischer) pitched for us and pitched a pretty good game.” Fischer more
than dominated the Indians bats, holding the Tribe to three hits (all
singles) while striking out eight and allowing one walk. “She pitched
extremely well,” said Jenkins. “She was very upset with herself over
that one walk.”
On defense, the Tigers had no miscues but exploded on offense, knocking
out a dozen hits including a solo homerun by Allison Philippi. “Playing
errorless softball is key in winning,” said Jenkins. “We had the bats
going tonight and we looked good.”
Ansonia scored two runs in the second and the fifth with a single run
in the sixth. The game winning run came early when Kayla Rader singled
followed by another single off the bat of Taylor Thwaits with both
crossing the plate later off a hit from Holly Hammaker.
In the fifth, Philippi would drive one over the fence putting the
Tigers up 3-0 at that point. From there, it was a matter of solid
pitching from Fischer and good defense behind her.
In the sixth, Haley Wampler would triple and later score, giving the
Tigers the 5-0 advantage and the final margin of victory. “We have a
young team and we are getting better,” Jenkins stated. “We start four
freshmen so we have a long way to go but we are getting better.”
Now 2-3, the Tigers will travel to Arcanum today to face the Trojans in
a doubleheader.
