Jets break it open

PITSBURG- Holding a 2-1 lead through the first five innings, the
Franklin Monroe Lady Jets put three runs on the board in the bottom of
the sixth to post a 5-1 Cross County Conference victory over
Mississinawa Valley Monday.
Even though the Jets got the win, it wasn’t a game that coach Mike
Morris was overly pleased with.
“We came out flat today. We didn’t play very well,” said Morris.
“Kristen (Stryker) pitched very well today, but our defense in the
first inning wasn’t there. We’ve got to play seven innings of solid
defense and we didn’t do that today.”
The Hawks scored the game’s first run in the opening inning when Nicole
Shaw led things off with an infield single.
After stealing second and third, Shaw would plate the game’s first run
on a wild pitch by Stryker.
Franklin Monroe countered with two in the bottom of the frame when
Jordan Stickley would walk with one down.
Susan Boston would follow with a triple to right, scoring Stickley.
With two down, Morgan Bingham singled Boston home, giving the Jets a
2-1 advantage.
After that, it was a pitching duel.
“They had a slower pitcher and I knew we would struggle with it,”
Morris stated. “My girls are young and they need to learn to adjust.”
On the night, the Jets pounded out 13 hits with Boston getting three,
two doubles and a triple, including two runs batted in with two runs
scored.
“Susan came up huge for us again,” Morris stated. “After the first
inning, the defense settled down and we started hitting the ball. We
hit the ball well, but to score only five runs is really frustrating. I
really don’t know what else to say. We’re being aggressive at the
plate, maybe seeing a faster pitcher will help.”
In a losing effort, MV coach Jeff Adams wasn’t happy with the loss, but
was pleased with his team’s overall effort.
“We are a young team,” Adams said. “We have no seniors on the team and
these girls really work hard. We came out a little flat but give the
credit to Franklin Monroe, they wanted it more than we did.”
With only five hits, Adams was concerned with the offense, but pleased
with the defense.
“We need to get our bats going, but we had no errors in the game,”
Adams pointed out. “One thing about this group is we are good on
defense. Once we get our bats going, we’ll be alright.”
The win put the Jets at 2-1 on the season while the Hawks fell to 2–5
on the season.
