TROY- Greenville sophomore Ally Russell was virtually unhittable Tuesday, holding the Troy Lady Trojans to just two hits while walking three and striking out nine as Greenville spanked Troy for the second time in as many days, 6-0.

“She knew coming in what she had to do today,” said Wave coach Jerrod Newland. “She’s starting to learn to adjust this weather. She’s use to 110 degree weather but to me this is a great day. Sixty degrees today is perfect for me but she’s getting there and making herself a little stronger and making the kids behind her make plays. Today, Troy got four base runners and we make every play defensively and that’s what it takes.”

Through the first six innings, both teams struggled in the cold weather as Greenville was able to push two runs across in the fourth inning, with Brianna Greer scoring the game winner in the frame.

Through the opening six, both teams combined for two runs (Greenville), 11 hits (nine hits Wave) and some outstanding defense behind both pitchers.

“I told the girls coming in to this game it was going to be a one or two run game,” said Newland. “We tried to take advantage of as many opportunities as we could and try to make them make plays. We were hitting the ball in the air and not making them make plays. Any time you go on the road, it’s just a battle.”

If the Wave ever needed a break, it came in the top of the seventh when Troy senior pitcher Amber Smith took a line shot off the finger tips that was more than she could bear.

At that point, the Wave went on the attack against the Trojans backup pitcher, a sophomore.

Greenville scored four big runs in the final frame with run scoring hits from Rachael Class, Greer and freshman Ashton Kester.

It was also a night when the unthinkable happened as one Lady Trojan was ejected from the game for throwing an elbow in an attempt to stop a Greenville base runner.

“Crazy things happen when you’re on the road,” said Newland. “You had two competitive teams out there and it’s just GWOC softball at its best. When you go on the road it gets screwy and crazy and I’m just glad to get out of here with a win.”

On the night, Greenville pounded out 15 hits as Jazzlyn Petry and Allison Minnich collecting three hits each. Karlee Lennon and Kester picked up two hits apiece while Russell, Haleigh Luce, Erin Albright, Class and Greer had a hit to their credit.

With the win, Greenville goes to 15-2, 6-0 GWOC North and will play at Xenia tonight, weather permitting.

Friday, the Wave will play in the Champions Challenge in Loudonville, Ohio.
