Another history making day
A great day for two

GREENVILLE- The weather couldn’t have been much better Saturday for the grand opening of Lady Wave Stadium at Stebbins Complex.

After both Greenville and Wayne took infield practice, the moment that everyone had been waiting from finally came.

The ribbon cutting and the official opening of the newest softball field in Darke County, Greenville’s Lady Wave Stadium.

“To Lady Wave softball, its here and forever,” said Wave coach Jerrod Newland. “I’ve enjoyed my first ten years and cannot wait for the next ten. The best is yet to come.”

Then Newland spoke to the sponsors.

“Without you (the sponsors), this would not be possible,” said the Wave coach. “To the community of Greenville I say, Thank You.”

Once the preliminaries were over, sophomore pitcher Ally Russell threw out the historic first pitch and the 2013 season was underway.

Needless to say, it was a perfect day to play two and the Wave took both games, 4-0 over Wayne and 7-2 over Milton-Union.

Once again, it was a great day for not only the Lady Wave but Greenville High School as a whole.

I can remember when Newland started six freshman and it had a lot of people bent out of shape.

That was the day I gained a ton of respect for the new coach.

He made a statement that day, telling people he was going to do it his way.

Four years later, the 2007 D-II state softball title came to Greenville.

I was a part of Greenville sports history and Saturday, I was once again a part of history with the opening of the new complex.

I have no idea how much longer I will be a part of the local sports scene but one thing I do know is this.

Jerrod Newland has given me some great memories over the last 10 years and unlike him, I really don’t know if I’ve got 10 more years in me.

Would love to make another road trip with the team one day and another trip to Canton and a state title would be great.

But for now:  Lets’ play two.
