The fair ends
as usual
Very disappointed

GREENVILLE- It's been a long-standing tradition that the annual Darke
County Fair be closed down with the demolition derby.
The 157th edition was no different.
Approximately 73 cars, not including lawn mowers, hit the track at 7
pm, Friday.
With metal crunching and smoke blowing into the air, the Darke County
Fair came to an end.
I guess I came from the spoiled bunch back in the day.
I was always use to seeing anywhere from 100-130 cars ready to do
battle.
Not any more.
Back in the days, it was old beat up Cadilacs, 88's and 98's.
We always called them the tanks.
Not anymore.
Today, we have lawn mowers out there and in some derbies we have,
compact cars, trucks, buses and even semis.
Lawn mowers... What a joke.
According to one official from the Smash It Demolition Derby
organization, there are several reasons for going to the mowers and the
sub-compact cars.
The biggest reason being the big cars aren't as available as they once
were.
Okay, I can live with that reason but it's the lawn mowers that I can't
live with.
Who really wants to see lawn mowers out there on a demo track.
I don't!
It's almost as exciting as watching paint dry.
I remember the days when it was "run what you brung."
I could even handle trucks being out there but not lawn mowers. Trucks
are vehicles and there will be some metal crunching and a little more
excitement as well.
It seems to me the fair board could go back to a good derby
organization, like Outlaw.
These guys were tough but they put on a good show and made the driver
follow the rules.
NO LAWN MOWERS HERE BABY!
Just real cars.
I remember my step-dad and his brother-in-law, knocking out the windows
of their family cars just to get in to the derby.
I guess it's not the same anymore and to be perfectly honest, it's very
disappointing.
This is coming from a guy that use to love going to the demolition
derby at the fair.
Not anymore!

In today's derby, we
have lawn mowers. It's not your daddy's derby anymore.
