Wave looks decent in Monday scrimmage

GREENVILLE- The Greenville Wave football team welcomed Wilmington in Monday for an early morning scrimmage.

With offense, defense and special teams being looked at closely by Wave coach Aaron Schaffer, the overall outlook on the team was a positive one by the second year coach.

“I think we are leaps and bounds ahead of last year at this time,” said Schaffer. “We don’t try to over prepare for this because it was nothing more than a practice for us.”

On offense, Schaffer was pleased.

“We came out and moved the ball well against them,” Schaffer stated. “They changed up their defensive front on us and slowed us up just a bit.  We had only seen the 50 front a few times in practice and that slowed us down. All in all, I was pleased with the offense.”
On defense, the coach was just as happy.

“On defense, I think we are miles ahead of last year,” admitted Schaffer. “In a scrimmage like this, we don’t show our full package. We line up in our base front and play football. My initial impression is very positive.”

There was a weak spot Schaffer was very concerned about.

“I think we have to find our third and fourth receivers better,” he said. “Once we get that, we should be in good shape. We have some kids that have been sick and on vacation so once we get everyone in there, things should come together. We missed Ryan Guillozet today.”

On special teams, the Wave has shown some improvement as well.

“I think we are going to be fine on special teams and work with then just as much as we do our offense and defense,” Schaffer said. “We have a lot of work to do but things are looking better for us.”

Greenville opens at home with Eaton August 30.
