Lady Wave no
match for defending state champs

GREENVILLE - Take nothing away from the Greenville girls’ basketball
team.
When the defending D-1 state champions rolled into town, no one thought
it would be a walk in the park for Greenville.
When the final buzzer sounded, it was a final score that did not
reflect the heart Greenville played with as the Wave fell to Kettering
Fairmont, 64-10 Wednesday.
“We probably won’t see a team this good the rest of the year,” said
Wave coach Bill Plessinger. “We told the girls that we did a lot of
things well tonight but it’s hard to tell that when you’re playing a
team that good. I have to give coach Romine (Lacy) credit. She is a
classy lady with a classy program. She could have kept Waterman
(Makayla) and Westbeld (Kathryn) in there and scored a hundred and
twenty points.”
Now 0-6 on the season, Plessinger sees light at the end of the tunnel.
“We’ve been through a gauntlet,” said the Wave coach. “Tonight, I
thought we had the best ball movement than in any game this year.
Karlee Lennen may have had one of her best games so far but when you’re
up against two D-I college athletes in the post, you don’t see how good
of a game she really had. Their second team wasn’t too bad either.”
With 3:48 remaining in the first quarter, Romine had started to call
the dogs off, holding a commanding 18-0 lead that went to 25-0 after
one quarter of play.
That lead blossomed to 33-6 at the half and 49-10 after three with the
Firebirds defense throwing up another shutout in the final frame.
“There was nothing negative said in the locker room after the game,”
Plessinger pointed out. “That is just a great basketball team. We have
to take this as a learning experience. One of the positives was
rebounding. We rebounded really well at times. That was a bright spot.
We did a good job boxing out.”
Off and on during the season, Plessinger has talked about his team
being battle tested.
“If I had to give my team a letter grade, it would be a ‘C’,” said
Plessinger. “I know it’s hard to believe a grade that good when you’re
0-6 but the level of competition we’ve played has been tremendous. With
the exception of Versailles, our schedule starts to get a little better
and we are playing teams we match up better with. We are still learning
but we are getting better. We never gave up tonight and they played
hard to the end. We’re doing a lot of things right and we’re getting
there.”
Greenville will see action Saturday at Baker Middle School with
Fairborn.
