Bulldogs bite Trojans
Arcanum eliminated
By George Starks
TROY- Trailing 13-9 with one quarter in the books, the Arcanum Trojans
were never able to get a lead and hold it Tuesday, falling out of the
OHSAA basketball sectional tournament with a 59-49 loss to Yellow
Springs.
We had to put it out there and lay it all on the line,” said Brian
Gunter, head coach at Arcanum. “We came out ready to play. This was the
best possible draw we could have wanted.”
Looking at a slim four-point deficit, the Trojans outscored the
Bulldogs by one in the second frame to trail 29-26 at the half.
With the third quarter complete, again the Trojans won the frame, this
time by two, to trail by a 42-41 count, even though Arcanum held as
much as a five point lead in the frame.
Then came the quarter that would decide it all.
The fatal fourth.
Yellow Springs would come out running and would score eight of the
first 10 points of the stanza, putting the Trojans behind the eight
ball.
Arcanum did everything it could to keep the score close and with 1:26
remaining, remained within striking distance, down 54-47.
Twenty-three seconds later, the Bulldogs Roland Newsom hit two from the
charity stripe and the lead had blossomed to a 54-47 count.
The dagger for the Trojans came in the form of turnovers.
Arcanum committed 19 turnovers on the night, something that Gunter said
could not happen if his team were to be successful.
“We have to protect the ball,” Gunter said before the start of the
game. “We need to improve on the offensive and defensive rebounding as
well.”
Mason Garber led the Arcanum charge with 17 points while senior Grady
Garno added 10 in support.
The loss ended the Arcanum season at 11-12 overall.
