Arcanum can’t hold lead in loss to Covington
Lady Trojans experience fourth quarter meltdown

COVINGTON- In only her second year at the helm of Lady Trojan basketball, Arcanum head coach Rachel Fearon has seen vast improvements in her team.

A year ago, the Trojans had a dismal season, getting just one CCC victory.

In the 2012-13 season, Arcanum has won six conference games.

Thursday, the Trojans ventured to Covington to do battle with the Buccs in a Cross County Conference game, looking for win number seven in the conference.

Leading virtually the whole game, the Trojans experienced a scene from the ice age and had a meltdown.

Leading 38-28 with well over seven minutes left in the game, Arcanum fell apart on both ends of the floor, falling to Covington 44-41.

Arcanum trailed after one, 11-9 but led at the next two stops, 27-20 and 36-28 after three.

It was soon thereafter, the wheels fell of as the Buccs came with the pressure.

“We played a tough game in the first three quarters and then the fourth quarter came and they put the press on, and it was just like we used all of our energy breaking that press,” said Fearon. “Once we broke the press, we couldn’t come down and run the half-court offense. We’ve had to work on that all season and tonight when they put that on us, it was the ruination of our half-court offense it seemed like.”

Trailing by 10, the Buccs went to work on offense and defense as the press created 11 Arcanum turnovers while the offense for Covington slowly chipped away at the deficit.

With 5:08 left in the game, Covington had sliced the Arcanum lead in half, trailing 38-33.

Nineteen seconds later, it was Heidi Cron that hit a 12 foot jumper from the right elbow and the 10 point Trojan lead was down to three.

“Covington was playing their hearts out in the fourth quarter,” said Fearon. “It was the press that interfered with our offense.”

With the Buccs gaining the tie at 38-38 and now on a 10-2 run, the home team took its first lead since the first quarter when Jesse Crowel hit in the paint, giving the Buccs a 40-39 advantage with 2:38 remaining.

From that point on, it was all Covington.

Despite the loss, Fearon got some quality minutes from her bench, mainly from senior Hannah Prestel.

Prestel and senior Morgan Buck led the Trojans in scoring with 10 points each.

“Hannah had a great game tonight,” said Fearon. “She was shooting the ball and was on fire. It was good to see her have that positive offensive game tonight. Morgan had a solid game tonight as well. I think they are seeing their senior year coming to the end, and it’s hard to know that your regular season is coming to an end. I am so happy to see them have good games tonight.”

Arcanum will be at home today to play Milton-Union. The noon tip will also be the start of the Trojans senior day as Buck, Prestel and Rebecca Denniston will be honored.
