Keller and
Shook move on to state competition
Brisco named Coach of the Year
By George Starks
LIBERTY TOWNSHIP- With four athletes taking part in the district
competition Saturday at Lakota East High School, Paige Keller and
Samantha Shook moved on to the state level in gymnastics from Darke
County.
Keller (Greenville High School), placed first in the vault (9.575),
third in the beam, seventh in the floor exercise and 21st on the bars.
Even with a low score of 8.1 on the bars, Keller was second overall in
the all-around with a 35.625.
“She got a little carried away on the bars and she fell but it was a
beautiful routine,” said head coach Jackie Brisco. “She won the vault
and that is her best event. Her floor routine and her beam were both
solid and she knew what she had to do coming in to advance to the
state. She did a nice job.”
Ansonia’s Samantha Shook will also go to state and will compete on the
bars and the floor exercise.
Shook was second in the floor, scoring a 9.125 and third on the bars
with an 8.875. Her all-around score, 34.725, left her in seventh place
overall.
“Sam came out and did a very good floor routine and she was great just
coming off a foot injury,” Brisco pointed out. “I was a little nervous
myself because this was only her second week back. She had a solid
routine on the bars and will be there as the all-around alternate. She
will get to compete on the floor and the bars though. It’s going to be
a fun week.”
“With two of the four making it, this makes me feel good knowing what
these two have been able to accomplish,” said Brisco. “Paige and Sam
knew what it would take to get there and they went out and did it. They
did a fabulous job. Hats off to the girls.”
Greenville’s Tessa Schatz finished 38th in the all-around with her best
event being a 24th place finish in the floor exercise.
Franklin Monroe’s Madison Myers came in 41st in the all-around
competition with her best event coming in the beam in 23rd place.
“Tessa and Madison did extremely well Saturday,” said Brisco. “It is
very difficult to go into these places and compete. Tessa, being a
freshman, had a beautiful floor routine and that set the tone for the
rest of the day. She has gotten so much better as the season has went
on and has matured in her own right. Maddie didn’t have her best day
but she was out there doing her best and she came out, hitting it hard.
You’re going to have off days like that but she is much improved in
multiple areas. She is developing into a really nice gymnast.”
With Keller and Shook both competing at the state level, Brisco will
also go as the Coach of the Year in gymnastics.
“When I found out I was on the ballot, I thought they were just being
nice by putting me there,” said Brisco. “I have to admit, I was
shocked. I know there are better coaches in there that respect me. I’m
still kind of in awe actually. It’s a great honor.”
Shook and Keller will compete Saturday at Hilliard-Bradley High School
in Columbus.
