Jets suffer flame out on senior night
By George Starks
PITSBURG- Before the start of the Cross County Conference game Friday
between Covington and Franklin Monroe, the Jets staff and faithful
honored their graduating senior.
That would be the only highlight of the night as the Buccaneers
dishonored the FM seniors, dropping a 71-48 loss on the Jets in the
Hangar.
“This wasn’t us,” said a very disgruntled Troy Meyers. “This is
probably the most embarrassing loss we’ve taken all year. When you get
beat, say you got beat and we got beat! We got beat from the time we
stepped on the floor. It was very disappointing. We had a great crowd
and a great ceremony for our seniors. Honestly, I thought we were
playing our best basketball of the season but it was quite clear, we
weren’t tonight.”
While the Jets didn’t play the best basketball in the first half, they
were still in the contest, trailing the Buccs, 26-19 at the
intermission.
After that, Covington was the only ones dropping in points as the Buccs
outscored the Jets, 24-8 in the third stanza, taking a commanding 50-27
lead heading into the final eight minutes.
Led by Devon Fourman with 16 points and Travis Feitshans with 10, FM
was missing one key ingredient in the offensive attack.
That ingredient was Trey Mong.
Mong finished the night with six rebounds and never scored.
“I’ll never throw any of my kids under the bus,” said Meyers. “We just
didn’t have a post presence tonight. When you become one dimensional,
you know exactly what happens. You have to give Covington credit. They
shot the lights out of the ball. They were prepared and we weren’t. We
became one dimensional and got beat by twenty-three.”
While the Jets suffered their second loss of the season in the
conference taking away any chance of a outright second place finish in
the CCC, Meyers tried to remain positive about his team.
“There is no quit in this bunch and you probably see that out on the
floor tonight,” stated Myers. “What just left that locker room has no
quit. Myself and this staff won’t let that happen. Toughness is one of
our big deals and we weren’t the tougher team tonight.”
The loss dropped the Jets to 9-2 in the conference.
The FM junior varsity took a 44-36 victory over the Buccaneers.
