Diceanu named
best in the state

PITSBURG- When Franklin Monroe hired Danny Diceanu to head up the Jets
soccer program, the powers at the time knew exactly what they were
doing.
Diceanu took the position 10 years ago and was recently named Coach of
the Year in the state of Ohio.
Over the course of time that the Romanian born Diceanu has been at the
helm, he has amassed a record of 130-44-7, producing teams that have
been recognized as some of the best in the state.
“It’s really nice to be recognized,” said Diceanu. “There are a
lot of good coaches in the state and to be among them in the running
for Coach of the Year is a special thing.”
Diceanu was a first time nominee for the award.
“To be a first time nominee and to actually be named the Coach of the
Year, is a great honor,” admitted Diceanu.
With many coaches in the area looking to find the secret key that
unlocks success, Diceanu says there is no secret to success at Franklin
Monroe.
“There is no secret,” said Diceanu. “We have great kids here that want
to work hard. You have someone that wants to push them and it’s all
worthwhile in the end. I stay with it because I have that fire in my
belly, so to speak. I’m very competitive and since I don’t play
anymore, the next best thing is to give back to this great sport.”
Although Diceanu got the award, he admits, he can’t do it by himself.
“I’ve had a lot of great players here,” said Diceanu. “They are the
reason I received this award. It’s a great special feeling when you can
see things come together. You shape them and when you get players of
all different abilities and you make them work together, that’s what
it’s all about. Getting the best out of the players. These guys really
work hard. They are a special group of kids. This is a tribute to all
the kids that have played here over the last ten years, not just to me.”
In his 10 years as head coach, Diceanu has had three players named as
the players of the year in the Cross County Conference.
This year, that CCC Player of the Year was Brian Robison.
“It’s just another tribute to the kids that come through this program,”
said Diceanu.
For most, being named Coach of the Year says it can’t get much better.
For Diceanu, it can get better.
“We can win state,” said the longtime coach. “You strive to get better
and improve on getting better every year. Hopefully, we have a good
group of kids coming in and we can build on the success we’ve had here
over the past 10 years.”
With many positions needing to be filled before the start of the 2013
season, Diceanu said he’s optimistic about the new season.
