Super Bowl XLVII
It’s just my
take
By George Starks
The Super Bowl pre-game hype seemed to go on forever Sunday, leading up
to what I thought was going to be a game that would hold little
interest to a Bengals fan.
Let’s face it. If you’re a fan of the black and orange in Cincinnati,
it was a little difficult to get wound up over the two teams Bengals
fans severally detest.
First of all the Baltimore Ravens play in the same division in the AFC
North so therefore, it goes without saying that rooting for the Ravens
might be a little difficult because the Bengals should have been there.
Then comes that other team that Bengals fans hate to even mention, the
49’ers. They beat us twice in the Super Bowl.
So this was a no win situation for a true Cincinnati fan… right?
Not so fast my friends.
This was a night that a true football fan, regardless of who the
team/teams are that you love, had to embrace.
In my case, I held true to the AFC North and was pulling for the
Ravens. As much as I can’t stand the team or the people they represent,
I really wanted to see Ray Lewis go out as a winner.
Despite his past, a true fan will look past that and see the player for
his God given talent.
Ray Lewis will not terrorize anyone on a football field again but he
will be in the Hall of Fame one day and in my opinion, a first timer.
I had the pleasure of seeing him play live in Cincinnati and believe
me, he’s a very intimidating man, even if he is 30 yards away from you
on the field.
I may not like him because he played for the enemy but I do respect him
for his style of play.
Ray Lewis will be missed by the people of Baltimore but not by the
people who had to play against him.
As I watched the first half come to an end, I had to wonder if it was
going to be a blowout or would the Niners make a comeback like in the
day of Joe Montana.
When Jacoby Jones ran the opening kick back for a 108 yard score, I
thought. “Here we go… game over, it’s going to be a blowout.”
Then the Niners came to life but only after the greatest event of the
night.
A 35 minute power outage.
Wow!
I don’t know what was going on after the lights went out but whatever
it was, the 49’ers caught fire and started what looked to be the
greatest comeback in Super Bowl history, only to fall short by a field
goal, 34-31.
It was a game that I thought was going to be a real bore but in
essence, it has to be one of the most entertaining games in the history
of pro football.
