Applications
being taken for turkey hunt
GREENVILLE- Applications are available for The Light Foundation’s fifth
annual youth wild turkey hunt, which is open to Darke County youth ages
12 through 17.
Headed up by three time Super Bowl champion and Greenville native Matt
Light, the Light Foundation is a non-profit organization. Each
year the foundation selects youth from Darke County to go on a turkey
hunt with Light and other guides.
This year’s hunt will take place April 19-21. In addition to hunting
turkeys, participants will spend the weekend at Chenoweth Trails, which
is a facility of The Light Foundation.
Last year 11 boys and five girls were selected to participate in the
fourth annual hunt. The kids combined to shoot 10 turkeys.
“It’s always exciting to come back for this,” Light said at the kickoff
to the 2012 hunt. “Because, I think one thing, just being around the
kids, it’s always fun, it’s always unique, you always learn something
about them, and they experience something they’ve never experienced
before, a lot of them. At the end of the day we have a lot of fun
chasing these birds around.”
Applicants must be between the ages of 12 and 17 on the day of the hunt
and must be a Darke County resident. They must also provide a valid
2013 Ohio hunting license and must be accompanied by an adult.
The deadline to submit an application is March 13 and those selected
will be notified by April 3. Those selected must also sign up for a day
of work at Chenowith Trails to help establish a wildlife habitat.
As part of the application for the hunt, applicants have to answer an
essay question. This year’s essay topic is: “What, in your opinion, are
the reasons why people succeed or fail?”

About Chenoweth
Trails:
The Light Foundation began developing its Chenoweth Trails facility in
2009, adding infrastructure to what was simply a rural 450-acre plot of
land located in Darke County, near Greenville, Ohio - Matt Light's
hometown. Now it includes two beautiful environmentally friendly yurt
structures for overnights, a timber frame pavilion with an eating and
large group meeting area, a new indoor bathroom and kitchen facility as
well as a state-of-the-art outdoor kitchen/cooking area. The outdoor
amphitheater overlooks the brook that winds throughout Chenoweth Trails
- perfect for conferences or meetings. We also built a turf field in
the middle of the woods for outdoor physical activities. The miles of
trails wind all throughout the property offering beautiful scenery for
hikes, runs, and races. The pond is great for swimming and fishing or
just sitting beside to enjoy a peaceful moment out in nature. There is
so much to offer here so consider using it for your family, church, or
business function.
The facility was built from scratch, and over several years, has grown
to include living quarters known as yurts, a state of the art cooking
area, outdoor fireplace and firepit, electricity, running water, miles
of trails, a pond, outdoor amphitheatre, parking lot, and this year
will add an outdoor pavilion and turf field. Chenoweth Trails plays
host to Camp Vohokase, an outdoor cultural leadership camp, which takes
at-risk teens and provides them the training, mentoring and support
they need to become responsible members of their own communities. It
also sponsors youth turkey hunts, and other programs designed to give
kids and community members the chance to get outside, take on
challenges, and strive for excellence. The Foundation's vision, to
support larger nonprofit groups' efforts, has already been realized, by
lending out the facility to organizations such as the YMCA, and the Boy
Scouts. Chenoweth Trails has also been used for corporate team-building
exercises, youth retreats, and church outings. The overnight
accommodations make it the perfect place for reunions, class trips,
trail races, business meetings and more. The Light Foundation is
thrilled about the potential for its Chenoweth Trails facility, which
it intends to build out and further develop year after year.
