Senior night a success

NEW MADISON- Senior night at Tri-Village proved to be a huge success as seniors Shaye Thomas, Teha Richards (four year starters) and Elizabeth Collins went out in style, dropping a 52-37 Cross County Conference loss on Franklin Monroe Thursday.

It was even better for Richards as she led all in scoring with 18 points; 11 in the second half.

"I thought Teha had a big night for us tonight," said Patriots coach Brad Grey. "She steps up and takes on the role of the scorer for this team. She knows it's her job and she's able to do it. Right now, offensively, she's carrying us."

After getting a 4-4 tie early with the Jets, Tri-Village went on a scoring rampage, taking a 17-4 lead after one due to a 13-0 run.

After that, the Patriots started to struggle and at the break, the 13 point lead had dwindled to a 24-15 advantage and the Jet defense was causing the Patriots problems.

"They played us tough on defense," said Grey. "We had a hard time getting good shots. We really struggled after that first quarter. I thought we looked good in the first quarter. I thought we were solid on defense and offensively, we were getting the things we were wanting to get. From that point on, it was a real struggle the rest of the night."

The Jet defense came up huge in the third eight minutes, holding the Patriots to just nine, third quarter points.

The saving grace for the Patriots came in the form of their own defense, holding the Jet offense to only five points in the frame to take a 33-20 lead heading into the final stanza.

"We are not playing our best basketball but we're finding ways to win games," said Grey. "Right now, I'm holding on to that as a coach and feel good about it. Just knowing that we're much better than we've been playing and hopefully we can find that team that we once were and get it going again."

With Richards leading the way, sophomore Echo Brown came off the bench to help spark the victory, netting a dozen for the Patriots.

"She had a great night and hit some big shots early for us," commented Grey. "She's the one that got it going for us in the first quarter when we put her in. Echo is a competitor. She's just a sophomore but she's got the gumption to step up and take the leadership role when no one else will and I like that as a coach."

Grey commented on his three seniors.

"This group has had an unbelievable career," stated Grey. "Had we not gotten a win tonight, it would have put a damper on the season on senior night."

Tri-Village (17-1, 10-1) will be back in action at home today with Brookville.

Led by Claire Neiswander with 10 points, FM fell to 9-9 overall and 6-3 in the conference, will play at Russia today.
