Patriots silence Lions with ease
Richards has career game

BROOKVILLE- On a night when the game itself was never in doubt, only one question needed to be answered.

Could Tri-Village senior Teha Richards do it?

After scoring 32 points Saturday against Jefferson in a 101-22 opening round sectional romp, Richards needed 36 points to eclipse the 1,000 point mark at Tri-Village.

When the final buzzer sounded, the Patriots had rolled to a 107-13 victory over Emmanuel Christian and Richards had a career high, 40 points to lead the charge.

“The night she had was pretty incredible,” said Brad Grey, the Patriots coach. “To score a thousand career points is special but then getting that on a night when she scored a career high is just a great night for her.”

Richards was the second Lady Patriot to hit the coveted 1,000 point mark this season as senior Shaye Thomas was the first.

Playing with the likes of Thomas for four years and Kayla Linkous for three, Richards shares some great company at Tri-Village.

“She has pretty much been under the radar here because some of the players she has played with have gotten more attention,” Gray said. “Tonight, she’s put her name in that mix. She has put a lot of time in over the years and has dedicated herself to the program.”

After scoring 27 in the first half, the shot that put her over the top came at the midway point of the third on a trey. At that point, she had netted 34 points and hit the mark.

“Teha is a good, all-around player,” admitted Gray. “Any time you score a thousand points, that’s the mark of a great offensive scorer and she puts her name in that company of elite players. She is only the third player in the history of Tri-Village to score 40 points in a game.”

Tri-Village jumped out to a 23-0 lead in the opening frame before the Lions would get points on the board.

At the breaks, the Patriots held leads of 31-2, 57-4 and 82-11 before posting the 107-13 victory.

At the game’s end, all eight Patriots were in the scorebook as Thomas netted 15, Heather Ferris 12 and nine from Lexi Bruner with eight each from Liz Collins, Ech Brown and Reha Mikesell.

Junior Krystal Falknor rounded out the scoring with six.

Now, the Patriots will face Newton this afternoon at 2:30 pm at Brookville.

Tri-Village played the Tribe in the third game of the season, winning that game 68-22 on November 29th.

“I told the girls in the locker room after the game that we can’t go into this game thinking it will be the same as the first one,” said Gray. “We can’t even think about that game because they have improved and that was a long time ago. They played Covington tough and Covington had us in a pickle. You can’t relax in a tournament setting. If you do, you find yourself crying tears at the end of the game.”

Before the tip between the Indians and Patriots, the Franklin Monroe Jets will do battle with Covington in the first sectional final of the day at Brookville.
