V-Tigers
wrestlers heading to state
By George Starks
VERSAILLES- It's not the first time in the history of the Midwestern
Athletic Conference that two teams has squared off for a shot at going
to state in any sport.
In the recent past, Versailles and St. Henry played each other in
basketball for the state title.
The Redskins brought home the gold that time.
Wednesday, in the inaugural state team wrestling duals, the Tigers and
MAC rival Coldwater went head to head on the mat.
This time, the honor went to Versailles as the Tigers took a 37-26
victory over the Cavaliers.
After taking a 3-0 lead early, the Cavs gained a 3-3 tie and on the
next match, 120 pounds, junior Tyler Tebbe beat Corey Derringer. 8-0,
to take a 7-3 team lead over Versailles.
Versailles regained the lead as senior Andrew Slonkosky pinned
Coldwater's Jordan Obringer 36 seconds into the second period of the
126-pound match, putting Versailles up 9-7
At that point, the Tigers started to pull away when junior Matt Mangem
tech falled senior Alex Bowler, giving the Tigers a 14-7 lead.
Versailles rolled up a 26-7 advantage before Coldwater would put points
on the board again and at one point, the Cavs had closed to within five
at 25-20 when Versailles was penalized a point.
The Coldwater comeback was stopped when Versailles sophomore Kyle
Dieringer came up big with a pin 1:35 into the second period of the
195-pound match against Corey Selhorst, putting Versailles up 31-20.
The Tigers will now advance to the Division III state quarterfinals of
the OHSAA team wrestling championships and will compete at St. John
Arena Saturday on the campus of Ohio State, with wrestling set to begin
at 11 a.m.
