Jets snap Arcanum win streak
Streak ends at four

PITSBURG - Coming in on a four game winning streak, the Arcanum Lady Trojans and head coach Rachael Fearon was looking to make it five.

That thought was only a thought as Franklin Monroe rolled to a 58-45 Cross County Conference victory.

It was a tale of two halves for the Trojans.

Hanging close in the first half, trailing 17-11 after one and 26-23 at the break, Arcanum’s trouble started in the third quarter and the adversity never stopped.

“I’m proud of my girls,” said Fearon after the game. “They played hard right to the end.”

With the Jets holding a slim three point lead at the half, Franklin Monroe’s defense was the difference maker as the Jets forced 11 turnovers in the quarter, holding the Trojans to just four third quarter points and taking command of the game, 44-27.

So what was said at the break by Jets coach Gavin Spitler to get things changed?

“I told them to stop gambling and to play solid half-court defense and keep them in front of you,” said Spitler. “We did that in the third quarter. We did that the first time we played them (Bill Burkett) and for whatever the reason tonight, we came out and was over playing them in the first half. It was team defense making sure they didn’t beat us on the help side. A lot of those turnovers were lob passes in and we would just pick them off.”

With the second half defense clicking, the offensive charge was being led by senior Taylor Robins. The FM sparkplug ignited for 25 points to lead all scorers for the night, including five three pointers.

“You just knew it was going to happen,” said Spitler. “She is such a good shooter and the bottom line is that she’s not shot that well this year. Hopefully this will propel her to a lot more success because she can shoot the basketball, and we all know it, and tonight, they were falling for her.”

While the offense and defense was there for the Jets, the Trojans were putting on the pressure and the Jets protected the ball.

“We knew they would put on some type of a press,” Spitler stated. “We hit our foul shots and protected the ball reasonably well. We made a lot of jump shots that we haven’t been hitting. We can shoot the ball, we just haven’t done it very well this year.”

Arcanum was led on offense by freshman Rebecca Deao with 15 points.

The Trojans will host Ansonia today in a noon start while the Jets will be idle until January 7 when they travel to Dixie.

Also on Thursday in the CCC, Mississinawa Valley rallied late to beat Twin Valley South, 40-35.

Versailles thumped Parkway 63-32.

MV will travel to Troy Christian today to take on the Eagles in a 1 p.m. start, while the Tigers will see action again on January 10 when they host St. Henry.
