Local gymnasts
perform well in YMCA competition
By George Starks
GREENVILLE- Ten high schools, including teams from the Cincinnati area,
and eight individuals gathered at the Darke County YMCA Saturday for a
huge gymnastics competition.
Locally, no schools have a varsity gymnastics program but there were
four girls from the county that were in competition.
Greenville was represented by junior Paige Keller and Freshman Tesse
Schatz while Ansonia saw junior Samantha Shook and FM’s Madison Myers,
a sophomore.
Collectively, the four competed in all areas of the competition that
was comprised of the uneven bars, the balance beam, the vault and the
floor exercise.
With a couple of things added to their individual routines, Darke
County coach Jackie Brisco was pleased with the performance of her
athletes.
“I feel the girls did extremely well today,” Brisco said. “We threw
some harder tricks this week knowing it was a home meet to warm us up
for future events and to prepare ourselves for districts.”
Individually, Brisco had nothing but praise as she commented on her
four girls.
“Madison (Myers) had a very good day overall,” Brisco said of the FM
sophomore. “Her bars were great and her beam was consistent. Her best
event of the day was her floor routine. She scored high in that in her
floor exercise. Her vault was okay. Samantha (Shook) had a very
consistent day with her floor routine being the highlight of her day as
she scored a 9.0 on that. Her bars were very good and her beam and
vault were decent.”
Brisco continued with her comments on Keller and Schatz.
“Tessa had a wonderful day,” Brisco remarked about her freshman. “She
has really improved from last week to this week. Overall, my big thing
for her today was her bars. I thought she had an exceptional bar
routine, one of the best ones I’ve seen her do in a long time. She had
a beautiful floor routine and was consistent on the beam and the vault.
Overall, a great day for her. Paige (Keller) had a great bar routine
but her highlight was her floor routine. She hit her moves and had
great form. Her vault was good and that is her exceptional event and
she did well and she had a great beam routine. She hit all of her
elements. Just a great performance for her on the beam.”
With schools like Forrest Hills and Cincinnati Country Day as well as
Dayton Alter in for the day, Brisco commented what it means for the
county to hold a competition of this magnitude.
“For our area, it means recognition for the few high school gymnasts
that we have,” Brisco stated. “It’s a great way to get the word out for
future young kids that are interested gymnastics. Our communities need
to realize this is an event just like football and basketball. It’s up
and coming in our area, I believe.”
With growth being the future of any sport, currently, there is a
possibility of four more newcomers being on the scene next year with
Arcanum and Versailles bringing in two of the four.
