Pipenger proves dominant on offense

COVINGTON- After a slow start out of the gate Tuesday against Miami East, the Tri-Village Patriots could ill afford to have a repeat performance.

Senior Kyle Pipenger made sure that was not going to happen.

Pipenger poured in a game high 20 points Friday as Tri-Village sunk the Covington Buccs, 53-28 in Cross County Conference play.

Of the 20 scored, Pipenger steamrolled Covington in the first half. Going into the locker room up 30-16, Pipenger had already dumped in 16 points to lead the T-V charge.

“He (Pipenger) carried us in the first half offensively,” said Josh Sagester. “Our guys did a good job of finding him and he did a good job of delivering for us. Covington is big and thick. A lot of beef out there that’s hard to move.”

While Pipenger was held to just four points in the final 16 minutes of play, it was Tyler Cook on the block and Shade Brubaker from the outside that picked up the slack.

Cook finished the night with 15 while Brubaker chipped in 10 of his own.

“They (Covington) pulled Cole Owens off the floor for a rest and Cookie (Cook) went to work,” Sagester pointed out.

On defense, the Patriots couldn’t have been much better. Allowing 16 in the first half, the Patriots held the Buccs to only 12 in the second half, four in the third quarter.

“I thought our defense was excellent,” Sagester stated. “Pipenger dominated the first half on offense and our defense dominated for four quarters. We set goals in the pre-game in the locker room. Our goal tonight was to hold them to 25 and we gave up 28 so that’s pretty close. You give up 28 points in a varsity basketball game, you’re going to win a lot of games.”

Tri-Village set the tone early, jumping on Covington 9-2 then held leads of 16-6, 30-16 and 39-20 at the stops.

Tri-Village remains undefeated with a 14-0 mark while the loss was the only blemish in the conference for the Buccs.

The Patriots will travel to Bethel next Friday in a game that will determine the conference title.

In the junior varsity game, Covington was forced to hold off a determined group of Patriots, posting a 32-31 victory.
