Patriot cheer
team proves themselves at state
By George Starks
NEW MADISON- In a competition held in the early fall, the Tri-Village
cheer team qualified for a trip to Columbus and a chance to perform in
the state cheer/dance competition.
The Patriots did not fail.
When the girls returned home on Sunday, they brought back the gold in
the dance and finished fourth in the state in the cheer competition.
“It’s a wonderful feeling to know that you can go somewhere, where no
one knew who we were, we were the new kids on the block and we were the
first team to take the floor in the dance,” said Darlene Ary, TV cheer
advisor. “To win that competition was quite special. It’s something
these girls will never forget. We won it doing a hip-hop routine.
This was special to us.”
In cheer, it was a non-mount division B, intermediate and fourth
overall.
Tri-Village has long been known for its basketball program. Now, Ary
has a cheer program that is the best around.
“I think to be able to do this on the first time there, says a lot for
the kids and the school,” Ary stated. “We have been working toward this
for a long time. Our cheer program has continued to improve year after
year and it’s taken us to a spot that some though we would never get
to.”
When the Patriots returned home, the school administrators were very
receptive of the team’s accomplishments.
“Our principal, Todd Gentis shook my hand and congratulated me,” Ary
stated. “I told them that everywhere we went, we were complimented on
what a great squad we had and their behavior on and off the court was
amazing. We were told our girls were very respectful and they
represented our school well. Coach Sagester (Josh) was very supportive
of us. Everyone was very supportive of us on our trip.”
With two seniors on the squad, (Sarah Bowman and Shelby Scheips), going
out as champions says it all for them.
“Those two have been with me since they were in the seventh grade,” Ary
points out. “They have learned what it takes to be champions and
started winning at that level. They won the CCC competition and won at
the fair. Winning to them is nothing new. They won everywhere they
went. They set the bar for the future and I told this team to set the
bar so high that no one could reach it. That was our theme since junior
high.
Now that the state competition is over, Ary’s cheer squad will get
re-focused on the rest of the basketball season, cheering the 13-0
Patriots on through the end of the season and into the OHSAA tournament.
“Basketball is our first love here and right now, every team (boys and
girls) has a winning record,” Ary pointed out. “We are looking forward
to a great tournament run this year.”
Before the Patriots can think about a return trip to state in 2014,
there are things that will need to be taken care of.
“We have our mini-cheer camp coming up and right now, we have 71 girls
signed up and they will perform on February 1 here in a home game with
Ansonia,” said Ary. “We are doing the Cheering for a Cure. We will be
cheering against breast cancer that night. Ansonia will be in pink and
we will be in black to black out cancer. The next week is senior night
so we’ve got a lot of things coming up.”
After the season is over, competitions will be on the horizon and the
Patriots will be ready to take their shot at the gold once again.
