VERSAILLES- When it comes to team sports and winning at Versailles, it all starts with one word.

Defense!

Holding a 25-16 halftime lead, the Versailles Lady Tigers employed their defensive prowess against Greenville Saturday, holding the Wave to just nine second half points in a 54-25 victory.

In the second half, the Tigers allowed just three field goals.

“Those are great numbers,” said Versailles coach Jackie Stonebreaker. “I think the girls are learning defense better. They’re learning to move their feet and they don’t have to reach and make the opposition make the mistakes.”

With the defense playing solid, the Tigers on offense was sparked by Krista Putoff with 11 points but more than that, the Tigers were deadly from the charity stripe, hitting 17 of 20 on the day.

“On offense, we were aggressive on the inside taking it to them” said Stonebreaker. “We attacked the free throw line. We have to continue to play the way we did today the rest of the way out. Krista played a heck of a game. We don’t have that offensive stud and she came up huge.”

The Wave, winners of six of their last seven games and tied for first in the GWOC North with Troy, was no match for the Tigers, coming in tied for first in the MAC after losing to Marion Local Thursday.

Versailles threw a double team on defense on Wave senior Megan Galloway, holding the future player at Detroit Mercy to just 11 points. The defensive responsibility fell on the shoulders of Monica Heckman and Heckman responded.

“When you’re trying to guard a girl with the size and speed of Megan Galloway, you’re not going to be able to do things on both ends of the court,” said Stonebreaker. “She did a nice job of accepting her roll in defending her. In the third quarter, we went to a box and one on her with Brooke (Pothast) and I think Brooke did a heck of a job.”

The third key was the rebounding effort of Versailles.

In the opening frame, the Tigers had eight offensive boards with nine rebounds total.

“I knew we were killing them on the boards,” stated Stonebreaker. “Defensively, it didn’t seem like we had a lot. We did a nice job on the boards.”

Versailles, 16-2, will go to Coldwater Thursday to face the Cavaliers while Greenville, 9-7, will travel to Trotwood Wednesday to battle the Rams.
