Wave split two on senior night
Roberts gets 100th win
By George Starks
GREENVILLE- Seniors Nelson Roberts (138) and Nick Woodruff (220)
varsity and Troy Vore (170 junior varsity) all found success on the
wrestling mat Tuesday during the Wave senior night for the wrestlers.
Woodruff recorded a pin over Maurice Ickles of Sidney, putting his
shoulders to the mat at the 1:01 mark of the opening period.
Roberts picked up two tech. falls over Sidney and Trotwood Madison and
in the win over Sidney, Roberts recorded his 100th career victory.
“I’m very proud of Nelson on his accomplishment with the two tech
falls,” said John Shutts, Wave wrestling coach. “Nick got a pin tonight
and looked good as he always does. He makes things exciting when he
hammers people to the mat. Vore went 1-1 in the junior varsity and it
was a good night to end the season for these kids.”
As a team, the Wave split with the two teams on hand.
In the opener, Greenville lost to the defending GWOC North champions,
57-11.
“Sidney is very aggressive,” remarked Shutts. “it was a similar story
as to what we had last week against Versailles. We just have to learn
to be more aggressive and when you have a young team sometimes, you’re
timid. I will tell you this, I’ve seen a lot of our guys improve here
over the past week and a half to two weeks. We have guys that aren’t
getting pinned anymore but giving up tech falls. We are still giving up
a lot of points but you have to learn to crawl before you can walk. I’m
seeing them put themselves in positions to survive.”
The Wave then turned the tables on the Rams, posting a 41-26 victory
over Trotwood.
“Again, Trotwood is aggressive as a team and they come at you,” said
Shutts. “I told the kids after we lost to Versailles that they have to
immolate that kind of behavior. When they do, good things will start to
happen.”
With the state duel tournament to begin next Wednesday, Greenville may
be in a position to host the opening round of that tournament. Shutts
said he will know Monday.
“The kids are excited about the possibility of hosting the first round
of the state duels and this is a region we can compete in,” Shutts said
in closing.
