Powers gearing
up for 2013 football season
Trojans looking to rebound from 3-7 season

ARCANUM - In his initial campaign at Arcanum, head coach TJ Powers
suffered through the growing pains of a 3-7 campaign.
This season, Powers is looking to get things squared away as he
conducted his annual football camp in Trojan nation.
“This game is 90 percent mental,” said Powers. “We need to get past
what we did a year ago and focus on what lies ahead. We won three games
last year and I would like to see seven or eight and make the
play-offs.”
With 28 players looking to turn a losing season into a winning one,
Powers is planning to be the force behind the success.
“We are really on the young side,” said the veteran coach. “We have six
seniors and only three juniors. The rest are sophomores and freshman
but they are good players. It’s a big jump from eighth grade football
to varsity so everyone will contribute. We have a good bunch of kids.
We are leaps and bounds ahead of where we were last year at this time.”
With the mental aspect of the game being a factor, Powers says things
must change from a season ago.
“We have to change the mentality,” said Powers. “We can’t accept
losing. Not that they have in the past but it’s just unacceptable. We
have good chemistry here with these kids. I already see after four
nights of camp the chemistry is there.”
With many football programs, numbers will often be a factor.
At Arcanum, this is no exception.
“We would love to see more kids out,” Powers stated. “I really don’t
worry about that anymore and next year we will try to get more kids out
but for now, it is what it is.”
So what does a camp do to prepare kids for two-a-days?
Plenty according to Powers.
“The big thing about these camps is getting a jump on putting the
system in,” said Powers. “We need to get our offensive and defensive
schemes in. We need to get our technique down. We can’t put on the pads
but we can get use to the heat with two-a-days coming.”
Powers went on to say the theme for the 2013 edition of Arcanum Trojan
football is mental toughness.
“I think mental toughness will help propel us from three wins to seven
or eight wins,” Powers stated. “Obviously, we would like to win them
all but seven or eight would be a pretty darn good season. Our goal is
to get to the playoffs.”
With that being said, Powers acknowledges three teams that have to be
dealt with in the Cross County Conference.
“We still have to play Covington, Miami East and Tri-County
North,” Powers said. “They are always at the top of the pack. We have
to get to that level and I firmly believe we can.”
Arcanum will open its season at home against Preble Shawnee.
