Lady Wave tennis in
high gear

GREENVILLE- Two years ago, the Lady Wave tennis team won the GWOC North
title outright.
A season ago, the Wave shared that title with Troy and Butler as
Greenville topped Troy but fell to Butler while the Aviators eventually
defeated the Trojans.
Those losses by all three schools forced a three-way tie for the
conference title.
Now, Wave coach Jim Koontz will look to rebound from that three-way tie
and win the conference without sharing it.
Koontz is positive it can happen and for good reason.
He lost no one from his team.
“I have everyone from last year’s team back,” said Koontz. “Butler and
Troy lost a few players, but it seems like the conference always goes
through Troy and it will be that way again this season. I’m positive
about our chances to win the conference outright though.”
The Wave tennis team will start with Sophia Novis-Davis (16-6), the
number one singles player. Behind her will be Michelle Borgerding in
the second singles spot with another Novis-Davis in the third singles,
slot, Raquel.
“Raquel set a school record last year with wins in the third singles
with 22 wins,” said Koontz. “In the second singles, Borgerding set a
school record with 24 match wins. Madison Bixler was second team
all-conference and will play with Abby Monnin on our first doubles
team. Our second doubles team will probably be Erin Scott and Holly
Cameron and maybe Mallory Rich. We will have challenge matches. Those
will happen on August 1. That is the first day of actual practice.”
August 12, the Wave will open the 2013 season against Van Wert.
After that comes Miamisburg, Celina, Xenia and St. Mary’s.
Five grueling matches in five straight days with Van Wert, Miamisburg
and St. Mary’s being home matches.
“That’s a tough way to start the season,” Koontz admitted. “If you want
to be the best then you have to play the best out there, and that’s
what we’re doing and we are getting some of the best right out of the
gate.”
In addition to playing some of the best, Koontz said the schedule was
beefed up a little with the addition of CHAMINADE-JULIENNE and Tipp
City. Falling off the Wave schedule will be Middletown Madison and
Stivers.
“We picked up two very good teams with Chaminade and Tipp,” said
Koontz. “Playing Stivers and Middletown was a little embarrassing.
Chaminade and Tipp are two of the top teams around here.”
The Van Wert match will begin at 4 p.m.
