GTI holds on
for win over Coldwater
Ward pitches well
in victory

GREENVILLE- Despite having six errors committed behind him by his
defense, GTI pitcher Cole Ward went six solid innings Wednesday,
overcoming the odds that would eventually plague him.
Ward went six solid innings, allowing six hits and five unearned runs
as GTI topped Coldwater 7-5 to go to 4-6 on the summer league season.
“Cole is a gamer,” said GTI coach Trey Wolters. “Cole is very good at
keeping his head in the game, every pitch of the game. I doesn’t matter
if he’s in the field, pitching or hitting, he always has his head in
the game. He’s doing a great job being a leader..”
Trailing 3-0 after the completion of the top of the first, Greenville
struck back in the second, sending 11 batters to the plate scoring six
times.
In that frame, Ward had a run scoring single, helping his own cause in
the process.
“Everybody was helping the cause,” said Wolters. “They were all smart
at the plate, waiting on their pitch. Cole drove in a big run in the
inning that contributed to the victory. He was in a slump but he’s
coming out of it.”
On the game, GTI punched out nine hits with Ward picking up three while
Austin Weimer and Kyle Carlisle had two hits each.
Wolters commented on the six miscues in the field.
“Last night at Vandalia, we made one or two errors and Vandalia is a
very good team,” Wolters said of the 7-6 loss on Tuesday. “We are kind
of here and there on errors. This is a young team and they will fix it.
I’ve told them they will make mistakes but I think by the end of the
season, they will be where they need to be making good defensive plays
all the time.”
With GTI fielding basically a junior varsity team with only two varsity
players (Ward and Quinton Wood), Coldwater fielded a varsity MAC squad.
“”Coming into the season, I wondered how we would do,” Wolters stated.
“After the first double-header against Ft. Recovery, I could see where
the experience came in. They were off three weeks after spring ball but
there is some talent here and they’re all getting better.”
