GTI I loses on the road
Coldwater pitching
too much
By George Starks
COLDWATER- It’s a rarity when two high school pitchers are throwing no
hitters.
What makes it even worse is someone has to lose.
Such was the case for GTI I pitcher Tyler Netzley Wednesday night at
Coldwater.
With the Greenville based team recently coming off a big 7-5 win over
Coldwater last week, Netzley and head coach Tray Wolters wanted to make
it two in a row.
Despite a stellar pitching performance by the incoming freshman, GTI
fell to the Cavaliers, 4-1 on the road.
“This was another game where the kids were playing really well,” said
Wolters as his team falls to 4-9 on the season. “In our nine losses,
five of them we lost by a single run and one loss was lopsided but
these kids hang in there and play tough to the end.”
For Netzley and Coldwater starter Malave Bettinger, things were spot on
from the mound.
Through four innings, Bettinger had hurled a no hitter but was far from
a perfecto as he issued six walks in those innings, leaving the bases
juiced in the first and fourth but allowing no runs.
Netzley was nearly as good as his counterpart on the hill.
Netzley had no hit Coldwater through the first three frames but did
allow a run when Brody Hoying drew a one out walk then promptly stole
second and third, only to score on a passed ball.
Coldwater got its first hit of the game in the fourth, a double to left
by Aaron Harlamont that netted the second run of the game for the Cavs.
GTI finally broke through in the sixth when Netzley opened things up
with a single to left.
After stealing second, he would later score on a single to center by
Alex Hughs.
On the night, GTI would strand eight runners, three in the first and
third with two more being left on base in the sixth.
“We started hitting way too late,” said Wolters. “We got ourselves in a
hole and couldn’t get out of it. Our pitching has been good and our
pitchers have stepped up every game.
“We had a lot of chances to win this game,” Wolters continued. “We had
the bases loaded twice and runners on second and third with one out.
Those were opportunities that we let slip away. We had our chances to
put runs on the board. We have to force the action and tonight we
didn’t do that. We could have played a little small ball and I put that
one on me. I thought about putting on the squeeze here and there and
didn’t do it.”
