Former
sports editor elected to PVHS Hall of
Fame
Don
McDermott, sports editor of the Greenville
Daily Advocate from 1962 through 1966 and 1987 through 2001, has been
elected
to the Pahrump Valley High School (PVHS) Athletics Hall of Fame as a
major
community contributor.
McDermott
was the sports editor of the Pahrump Valley Times from June 2001
through April 2012. He retired (again), but returned to the newspaper
business
in July 2002 as editorial manager of the Pahrump Valley Mirror, a
weekly
newspaper.
At the Times, he reported on 11 Nevada state championship teams in six
different sports from 2002 through 2008. At the Mirror, he covered a
girls
soccer team that won its second straight state crown in 2012. He also
covered
three-time Arizona State University track All-American
Dominique Maloy
when she was in high school. At PVHS, Maloy won 15 out of a possible 16
individual state titles in track, including four each in the 100, 200
and 400
meter dashes and three in the long jump.
In 2012, McDermott wrote a story about Gene Riegle and Life Sign's
victory in
the 1993 Little Brown Jug for Online news. In 2007, he covered the
National
Fast Pitch Softball convention in Las Vegas and reported on
Jerald Newland's
receiving a major award.
