Reds looking to
start Cueto Sunday
bleacherreport.com
CHICAGO — Tony Cingrani was called up to make a start Tuesday at
Wrigley Field, but if things go according to plan, it will be his only
start with the reds for the foreseeable future. Right-hander Johnny
Cueto threw 35 pitches off the mound during a bullpen session before
Tuesday’s game and the Reds are hopeful he will start the next time his
spot comes up in the rotation, Sunday against the Brewers at Great
American Ball Park.
Sunday is the first day Cueto is eligible to come off the disabled
list. Tuesday was the second start he’s missed with what the team is
calling a right shoulder strain.
“I felt really good,” Cueto said after the throwing session at Wrigley
Field. “I feel ready now.”
Pitching coach Bryan Price said Cueto looked good and felt good after
his bullpen. Cueto had thrown the last few days, but not off the mound.
The team decided to do more work with the training staff during this
rehab in hopes of allowing the injury to subside. Cueto will throw
again on Friday and a decision about Sunday’s start will likely be made
then.
“It’s the goal, but it’s like any injury, you want to feel as confident
as you can that he’s healthy and it’s unlikely he’ll re-injure it,”
Price said. “There’s no guarantees. Today was another step.”
