A little help
needed here
A time to change
gears
By George Starks
Being a part of the local sports scene, it should come as no surprise
that basketball season is my favorite.
I have often said that if it were my decision to make, the season would
take a month or two off and start up again, maybe wait until right
after spring sports is over.
It’s also no secret that the winter sports season is also the busiest
and most strenuous of all the seasons, but now that it’s over, it’s a
sad time for me.
With 16 basketball team, three wrestling teams, bowling, swimming and
gymnastics, it can be a strain on a person just trying to keep up with
it, but I’ve always welcomed the challenge, even now.
Now, it is time to change gears and as we all know, things will slow
down just a bit.
Actually, it will slow down a lot.
For the past 3-4 months, I have really been on the go and since the
start of the OHSAA tournaments, it’s been pretty much nonstop.
While baseball and softball are great sports to go to and relax,
everything is played if the weather permits it to be played.
When things are cancelled, they usually have to be re-scheduled.
While I have yet to sit down and make out a schedule in advance, the
Lady Wave coach has already asked me if I would be accompanying the
team to the Champions Challenge, April 26-27 in Loudonville, Ohio.
As it stands right now, this sounds like a great idea and it would be
like old times back in the day when I was making a lot of road trips
with the Wave softball team, but it’s also a question I’m not able to
answer yet.
We have a ton of snow on the ground right now and softball and baseball
may very well be called off, but we never know.
Coach Newland has often said, “Weather is not a factor.”
So again, who knows what will happen.
With spring sports due to begin Saturday, things have already gotten a
bit complicated as Saturday is opening day at the new Lady Wave
Stadium, but on top of that, we have the Lady Tiger Classic Track and
Field Invitational as well.
Normally, the Lady Tiger Classic would take precedence over all other
events, but with the opening of the new stadium, I feel that must come
first.
For those of you that enjoy the track and field scene and would be
willing to lend a hand with a pic or two and a short story, it would be
very much appreciated.
