GREENVILLE- Putting up four runs in the first, the Greenville Lady Wave softball team remained perfect in the GWOC North Monday with an 11-0 victory over Trotwood-Madison in a five inning affair.

Coming off a 1-2 road trip to Loudonville, the Wave got back on track against the Rams in a games that could have been worse that it was.

“We don’t get too many games like this,” said Greenville coach Jerrod Newland. “We are fortunate for what we have here. We have kids that want to play the game and are good at it.”

Greenville jumped on the Rams early in the first when junior Haleigh Luce drew a lead-off walk from Johnee Robinson.

Brianna Greer followed with a free pass before freshman Jazzlyn Petry grounded out. Sophomore pitcher Ally Russell would get the game winning hit with a double to left, scoring Luce.

Newland, not wanting to run up the score, played everything base to base, allowed four runs in the opening frame, then three more in the second and third with one more run in the fourth on a RBI double off the bat of freshman Ashton Kester, scoring Karlee Lennon.

Russell, the starting pitcher, went three innings before giving way to Newland’s reliever, lefty Allison Minnich.

“Ally pitched extremely well and struck out all nine players she faced,” Newland said. “The plan today was to let her go three and if she would have went five, she probably would have struck out 15 batters a pitched a perfect game but Lady Wave softball isn’t about individual goals but it’s about winning as a team. We have 168 hours left to win the GWOC North and that’s what it’s all about.”

In relief, Minnich threw two frames for the Wave, striking out two and allowing the lone hit of the game to the Rams, a single to center by Jenna West in the fourth.

“Allison pitched an inning over the weekend and did a good job,” Newland said of the freshman. “She’s the first lefty I’ve ever had here and I love her to death just because that ball comes from the other side. I’ve been waiting on her for a couple of years now and she’s finally here. She’s our DH because she’s hitting .350, so she’s in the line-up every day.  She has four great years here.”

Greenville played the Rams again on Tuesday and will face Fairmont on Friday.

Monday and Tuesday, the Lady Wave will face Piqua for the conference title. Both the Wave and the Indians are undefeated in the GWOC North.
