Greenville gets another new hoops coach
Plessinger takes over struggling program

GREENVILLE- It’s a job veteran track coach Bill Plessinger has wanted for eight years and finally got.

The varsity coaching position for the Lady Wave basketball team.

It’s a program that has seen four coaches in the last four years and Thursday, Plessinger took his group to Arcanum for the first scrimmage of the year.

“I don’t know what I’ve got to be honest,” said Plessinger before the scrimmage. “They never had a coach during the summer and this is a work in progress.”

With Dave Westfall helping as the varsity assistant to Plessinger, the Wave now has two coaches that know the key to success.

It’s all a matter of getting the ship in the right direction and that starts with his system.

“We bring a whole different kind of basketball,” said Plessinger after the scrimmage. “We need to play offense but we have to play defense first. Tonight we played better defense than I thought we would play. We’re not worried about offense right now, we will get to that. We have to concern ourselves with defense and tonight we held down a good Arcanum team. Arcanum is a very good program and I thought we did outstanding.”

As the scrimmage season progresses, it’s not about winning or losing in the pre-season.

“I’m not concerned about winning or losing scrimmages,” Plessinger said. “I want us to just get better as we go along. Making progress is the key. Winning games will come and we will win our share of games. Greenville isn’t going to be the kind of team people are used to seeing in the past. Things are not going to be the same.”

Greenville will feature five seniors this season but two have not played over the course of the last two seasons and one saw very little playing time a year ago.

Paige Tester and Haley Luce will lead the Wave on the floor with Rachel Fourman who saw little playing time a year ago.

“Haley, Paige and Rachel are the three I have with any experience and this is a whole new world for Haley,” Plessinger said. “In the past, she was walking the ball up the court. I want to push the ball and force the action, hoping to force the other team to make mistakes on defense. When there’s a change for players like this, there will be some mistakes. I want this team to go out and get after it and tonight, I thought we did that. My seniors have bought in the program and they’ve got the underclassmen on board.”

Greenville will scrimmage at Tri-County North Wednesday and will host Tri-Village Friday.

The Wave will host the Annie Oakley Shootout on November 22 with Versailles, Graham and Eaton providing the competition for the Friday/Saturday tournament.

Game time Friday is scheduled for 4:30.
