UNION CITY- The Mississinawa Valley Lady Blackhawks will be looking at
a new coach and an old familiar face.
The new varsity head coach is Bo Humphries. The familiar face is one
that Tri-Village people know well. Roger Collins will be coaching the
junior varsity team in 2014 for Humphries.
Collins was once the Athletic Director and the head coach of the Lady
Patriots, coaching some very successful teams and some of the best
athletes in Darke County.
He will also assist Humphries on the varsity level.
“When I asked Roger to help me, he told me he had never coached a
junior varsity team,” said Humphries. “I knew this but he accepted the
offer and he’s been a huge help to me. The girls listen to him and
they’ve accepted what he brings to the team. I wanted to have a veteran
there beside me who’s been there and done it all and he’s the one I
wanted there beside me.”
Being a rookie head coach, Humphries wanted to make sure things were
being done the right way.
“I wanted to make sure I’m doing things correctly as a coach and the
team’s doing things correctly as well,” Humphries said. “Rogers is
making sure we are on the right path in getting things accomplished.
I’ve known Roger for many years and I know what type of person he is. I
respect him and he was willing to jump onboard. He’s the calmer of the
two of us. I’m more vocal and to the point where he’s more laid back
and will talk to the girls in a lighter tone of voice than I will. We
complement each other well and the girls really like him. It’s a
blessing to have him as a junior varsity coach.”
Off the floor, Humphries and Collins will bring a whole new style at
Mississinawa Valley.
On the floor, Humphries will be looking to a team the will feature
three seniors and two juniors as well as a host of sophomores and
freshman.
Starting at the guard positions, Humphries will be looking at two
players starting with his daughter Victoria, a senior and junior
McKenzie Dermier.
“Both these girls can run the point and they both will do that,” said
Humphries. “Neither of them will be there all the time, it really just
depends on what we’re trying to do on offense. Victoria brings a lot of
knowledge to the floor and she’s Able to look over the floor well.
She’s a very good passer and if I had to have an absolute floor
general, it would be her. Makenzie is able to do all that as well. Both
girls can dribble drive and spot up for the outside jumper. They both
are knowledgeable and quick. McKenzie is very versatile. She can play
just about anywhere of the floor if she’s asked to do it. ”
Seniors Logan Nelson Nicole Shaw will bring their brand to the floor as
well at the forward and center positions.
“I really don’t like talking about one player over the other,” said
Humphries. “This is a team aspect and I want to keep it that way. My
centers are not the only ones that will be rebounding for me. All of
them know they are to hit the boards. It’s about the team.”
Humphries said that his offense is going to be determined by what the
other team does on defense.
If his Hawks can get out and run, they will but Humphries said he’s
comfortable with the half court set as well.
Mississinawa Valley will open up on the road on November 26 at Ansonia
in a Cross County Conference battle.
