Galloway ready to attack at
the college level
Greenville standout excited
about the season

DETROIT -
Before Greenville
graduate Megan Galloway signed to play basketball at Detroit Mercy,
she had been contacted by many smaller schools and two large ones in
Maryland and Navy.
Mount
Saint Mary’s,
Austin Peay, St. Francis (Pa.) and West Lane University were the
smaller schools Galloway listed.
The
daughter of Mike and
Stacy Galloway, Megan is happy with her choice of schools for many
different reasons.
“This is
small school
with a small campus and it’s a lot like Greenville because of the
smaller sized campus,” said Galloway. “It’s only three hours
away from home and that makes it nice. They have a great science
program here and I want to major in biology, so it really works for
me. I get along well with the other girls and our game here will be a
fast-paced game and I like that because that’s what I’m use to.”
At 6-2,
Galloway played the
post in high school but will look to become a strong forward for head
coach Autumn Rademacher at Detroit, a coach Galloway says she really
likes.
“I like
her for a lot of
reasons” said Galloway. “She is very upbeat and I really like
that. On the court, she wants to get out and push the ball and that
was the way we played at Greenville.”
When it
comes to her
playing time, Galloway said everything is up in the air right now,
even though the start of the season is just a few days away.
“Coach
really doesn’t
know who the starters will be at this time,” Galloway stated. “I
don’t know how much playing time I’ll get, but I will take
advantage of the time I do get and will make everything count. We’ve
had one scrimmage and everyone got to see the floor, so she’s still
not sure because she’s bringing in a new offense this year.
Everything is wide open right now.”
Galloway
pointed out the
one big thing she likes about her teammates.
“They all
have good
attitudes,” Galloway stated. “They work hard on the court and are
really competitive with each other during practice. They push each
other to do their best and that motivates me to become better at my
game. All the coaches are positive and they want to push us to be
better. I like the way we go out and get after it in practice and
that is helpful to me.”
Size-wise,
the Lady Titans
aren’t big but could show quickness.
With only
two seniors on
the squad, 5-7 guard Senee Shearer and 6-1 forward Megan Hatter, the
teams tallest is Galloway with no player listed as a post or center.
Because
of the lack of a
legitimate post presence, Galloway’s past post experience at
Greenville could play in her favor.
“I think
I can really
help the team because of my rebounding ability,” said Galloway. “I
can hit the boards hard on the defensive end and get the outlet pass
going off the fast break and I can get the offensive rebounds as
well.”
With
eight players, on the
13 players roster listed as guards, it will be a running bunch of
Titans that will hit the floor on game day.
“We don’t
have a true
post player, but we are loaded with guards,” said Galloway. “We
are a small but fast team and our guards can spot up from the outside
and shoot the ball. They can drive the lane as well, so we will
compete with the bigger teams just because we are fast and quick. We
will put on a lot of full court pressure on defense to create
turnovers and possible scoring opportunities. On defense, we want to
be all over the other team and force them to shoot and make
mistakes.”
So what’s
the biggest
difference Galloway’s seen between Greenville and Detroit Mercy?
“In high
school, a lot of
things were centered around me,” said the former Lady Wave. “Here,
everyone is even and that make me play harder to be better.”
While
Galloway likes the
small campus atmosphere at Mercy, off campus, it’s anything but
small.
“This is
Detroit,”
Galloway said. “Nothing small about this place and when you get off
campus, everything changes. When you’re on campus, it’s a lot
like Greenville, but off campus, this is a city! Nothing small about
Detroit.”
After her
four years at
Detroit is up, Galloway, who had a 4.1 GPA at Greenville, plans to go
to med school to become a doctor.
Detroit
will open its
2013-14 schedule on the road at Canisus in Buffalo, New York on
November 8 before returning home on the 11th to take on Lawrence
Tech.
A member
of the Horizon
League, Galloway and the Lady Titans will invade the Nutter Center on
January 5 for a conference game with the Lady Raiders in a 2 p.m.
start.
