Tigers prevail
despite opening round jitters
By George Starks
Brookville - Coming in ranked third in the state, the Versailles Tigers
didn't exactly play their usual brand of volleyball Tuesday.
Versailles eliminated Houston in three games in sectional action at
Brookville, 25-8, 25-14, 25-5, the Tigers were sloppy in the first two
and at times seemed to struggle in a match that took all of 56 minutes
to play.
Game three saw a different group of Tigers.
“We got a little sloppy, but of course I always set the standard extra
high, and I expect perfection a lot of times,” Versailles coach Karla
Frilling said. “Overall, I thought we stayed pretty focused and pretty
sharp. I told them between the second and third games that we needed to
stay focused.”
Staying focused is exactly what Versailles did.
All five points scored by Houston were by breaking the serves of
Versailles. No Wildcat serve in that game ever touched the floor on the
Tigers side of the net.
It was the first tournament game of the 2013 for Versailles, the Lady
Tigers never trailed in any of the three games Tuesday night as the
Tigers took an opening round bye.
Game one saw Versailles lead from start to finish aided by a 4-0 run to
start the game.
Game two was a bit of a different story as the Cats gained three ties
in the game, 2-2, 3-3 and 7-7.
Game three was all Versailles as the Tigers jumped out to the early 9-0
lead before the Wildcats were able to break serve.
“It’s always good to get some of those first-game jitters out,”
Frilling said. “We’ve got a lot of experience, so shouldn’t have a lot
of jitters anymore, but it’s still tournament and the stakes are high.
So it feels good to establish that first win and keep rolling.”
Versailles will continue its tournament run at 1 p.m. Saturday in
Brookville.
“We got game one in,” Frilling said. “Now we’re really ready to roll
into tournament.”
