ARCANUM- Beechwood Golf Course hosted the 2013 GWOC girls golf tournament Wednesday as 13 schools watched powerhouse Centerville run away with the team trophy.

The Lady Elk belted out a team score of 327 while Springboro was a distant second shooting a 356.

As for the host team Greenville, the Wave rolled into the clubhouse in fifth place with a team score of 386, tied with Troy but lost in the tie breaker.

This was a very good showing for our kids,” said Greenville coach Tracy Haines. “We had two girls with personal bests today si I’m very happy for both of them.”

With three seniors and two sophomores, losing to Centerville was no shame.

“Centerville is the powerhouse and that’s just the way it is,” said Haines. “No shame in losing to them. I’m very happy with our play today and so are the girl’s. I hope we can get three out of sectionals at Kittyhawk next Tuesday.”

Wave senior Jenelle Agne shot a career best 86 with dual 43’s on both ends of the 18 course.

“I was so happy with my play today and it was a great way to end my career,” Agne said. “We played the course yesterday (Monday) and I’ve played here before so It helped me. I’m happy with the fifth place finish. Out team did really well today overall.”

Agne will play at Kittyhawk for the first time since her freshman season.

“I hope I can hang with the best down there,” Agne stated. “I have a week to prepare.”

In addition, sophomore Casey Mortensen had a career best on the front nine, shooting a 48. The back nine wasn’t as kind to the Wave sophomore as she unloaded a 56 for a total of 104 on the day.

“I had a 48 on the front nine and that was great,” Mortensen said. “The back nine is tough here and it wasn’t kind to me but I’m happy with what I did today.”

Senior Jennifer Murray was pleased with her short game but not much else, shooting a 46-48=94.

“I thought my short game was good today,” said the Wave number two. “My drives weren’t so good though. My drives wouldn’t go straight and that messed me up. When my drives are off like that, my whole game suffers.”

While Murray struggled with her long game, senior Sierra Riffle (102) had another problem.

“My putting was horrible today,” said Riffle. “I could not putt today at all and I really don’t know why. I just had one of those days putting. Everything else was good today.”

Fifth on the Wave depth chart was sophomore Kayli Duncan. With a 113 on the day it was a learning experience for her.

“I’m happy with what I did today,” Duncan said. “This course has more water that Turtle Creek and the greens are thicker. This course is very challenging.”

The final thing that came as a surprise the Haines as she was voted Coach of the Year in the GWOC North.

“I can sum it up in one word,” said Haines “Shocked! I’m a first year coach and I was not expecting that.”
