Greenville
gets huge North victory Wave
overcomes huge deficit By

GREENVILLE-
After posting 19 wins a year ago, the Greenville boy’s baseball
team is looking for big things in 2014.
Coming
in with a 3-1 record Tuesday and facing GWOC North foe, Sidney, the
Wave looked to get their first North win of the season.
Down
5-0 early to the Sidney Yellow Jackets, Greenville battled back,
winning in a nine inning affair, 9-8.
With
two down and two on in the ninth, senior shortstop Ryan Eldridge
drilled a 3-1 pitch to right field, scoring Cole Ward from second for
the game winner.
This
was an exciting win,” said Wave coach Eric Blumenstock. “My heart
is still pounding. Now we have to go to their place tomorrow night
(Wednesday) and play them again.”
Trailing
3-0 after one and 5-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth,
Greenville had committed four huge errors that led to the Jackets
lead.
The
ability to recover from mistakes is the mark of a good team.
“The
big topic of conversation this week was errors,” said Blumenstock.
“When you make a mistake, flush it. If you make another one, flush
it and forget about it and move on. That’s exactly what they were
able to do tonight. It was perfect.”
After
getting off to a rocky start, the Wave finally dented the plate in
the bottom of the fourth with two runs as Quinton Wood knocked in two
with two down.
Sidney
slapped three more on the board in the sixth, taking what looked to
be a lead that would end things in seven, 8-2.
The
Wave went into its never say die mode and put up a four spot in the
bottom of the frame, closing to 8-6.
That
was when Blumenstock knew his team was holding all the cards.
“These
kids are fighters. A lot of seniors that have been through this
before,” said Blumenstock. “When these kids have their backs
against the wall, the turn around and do something great and they
make me look good.”
When
the Wave needed clutch pitching, they got it.
Blumenstock
started senior Austin Baumgardner.
Despite
playing behind four errors, the big right-hander stood tall on the
mound, trying to keep his team in the game.
When
the eighth came along, Baumgardner sprinted to the mound, like a true
thoroughbred, only to be pulled by the boss.
“Austin
threw a little bit more than I wanted him to tonight,” said
Blumenstock. “In the eighth, he sprinted out to the mound and I
couldn’t catch him before he got out there. Austin works hard and I
know what he’s capable of.”
When
Blumenstock was able to catch Baumgardner, it was in favor of junior
lefty Dylan Shumaker for the eighth and ninth.
“Shumaker
is the perfect fit to follow Austin,” said B lumenstock. “He
throws a lot of off-speed stuff and he is left handed and it’s a
weight counter when you’re coming off with someone that throw fast
and hard and Shumaker comes in and gives them a different look.”
With
the win, the Wave went to 4-1 (1-0 GWOC North) and will travel to St.
Henry tonight.
