Greenville
uses fifth inning offensive barrage

GREENVILLE-
With the temperatures falling faster than flies in a freezer, the
Greenville Lady Wave offense was almost the equivalent.
Holding
a 4-1 lead going into the home half of the fifth, Greenville was
struggling at the plate.
The
fifth inning was the deal breaker.
Allison
Minnich got the inning started with a lead-off double and would later
score the first run of the inning.
Not
only did Minnich get the fifth inning party started, she ended in.
The
Wave first baseman cracked the game winning hit, an RBI double
scoring the runs that would prove to be the back breaker of the
Avaitors.
When
senior Brionna Greer crossed the plate, the Wave had notched an 11-1
GWOC North victory in a five inning run rule contest.
“She’s
a good kid that hits the ball hard,” said Wave coach Jerrod
Newland. “Her, Petry and Kester are all good players and it makes
Lady Wave softball what it is.”
From
top to bottom, Greenville got production from nearly everyone in the
line-up, including two big hits from the nine hole hitter, Ashton
Kester.
“It
was great tonight,” said Newland. “Everyone that plays gets
opportunities and does it. That’s all you can ask for as a coach.”
Greenville
got on the board in the first when junior pitcher Ally Russell led
the game of with a double to left center.
Russell
would later score on an RBI ground out to shot by Minnich.
The
Wave would notch three more in the second, highlighted by a two run
double from Russell, scoring freshman Alli Hill and Kester.
Russell
would then score on an RBI single from Minnich.
Butler
would notch its lone run in the top of the third with one out.
The
Aviators would eventually strand two, both in scoring position, as
Russell would get a ground ot and a strikeout to end the frame.
Coming
off a 2-1 tournament weekend in Ashland in the Wendy’s Classic,
with the lone loss coming at the hands of the Mount St. Dominic Lions
in a 5-2 loss.
“We
came home winning two straight in Ashland and we got back to the
business at hand,” said Newland. “It’s all about winning those
10 league games and today was number three.”
On
the mound, it wasn’t a near perfect performance by Russell as the
Wave junior struggled at times.
Even
when it seem things were going south for Russell, the Wave defense
stood tall behind her.
“She
came out and threw her ‘B’ game today,” said Newland. “She
was able to keep us in it though. She kept them off balance and we
made the plays behind her and as a coach, that’s all you can ask
for.”
Now
9-2 overall, the Wave was scheduled to play Tuesday at Butler,
weather permitting, amidst the threat of snow.
