Lady Trojans shine in first scrimmage

ARCANUM- In the first scrimmage of the season, Arcanum coach Terri Day was very pleased with her team.

In a four way scrimmage with Greenville, Northeastern and Southeastern, all teams were afforded six scrimmage matches and Day was very positive about what she witnessed.

“I liked a lot of things I seen tonight,” said Day. “I was happy with our net play tonight. We have some good hitters and some big blockers. We attacked the net and the ball well so I’m very pleased with those aspects.”

As with any scrimmage, there are things that are exposed that a coach knows that will need to be worked on.

Day is no different.

“What I didn’t like was the weakness in our coverage,” Day admitted. “I have a lot of kids working on jump serves and we made some mistakes but this is the time to do it. We have a couple of very nice jump servers and my plan for the season is to serve hard and pass well. I really think everything else will fall into place.”

With only one senior on the team, Day will look to her under classmen to step up this season and lead the way.

“My only senior is out with a injury right now,” said Day. “We need to get her healthy but I’ve seen a lot of good things out of my younger players. There are things we need to get better at but I’m excited with what I seen in my team tonight. I think the one thing that really stood out to me tonight was Deao (Rebecca) hitting the ball hard with regularity. The last couple of years, it was hit and miss with her but now, she’s getting more consistent.”

One player Day touched on was her sophomore setter, Brittany Kinney.

“Brittany played well tonight,” Day pointed out. “She had some double hits on her set but she will clean that up but she is a very good player.”

Arcanum will open the season at Parkway on August 23 in the Panther Invitational but will have three more scrimmages, August 12 at home with Bradford and Springfield.

The Trojans will go on the road for their final two scrimmages with the first on the 14th at Eaton and a 9 am scrimmage at Twin Valley South on August 16.
