Dailey wins it
all in final night of racing
New track record set
By George Starks
GREENVILLE- Over the year at the Great Darke County Fair, the hype has
usually been about Darke County native, Jeff Nisonger.
Not in 2014.
In nearly 80 races contested at the fair this year, Jack Dailey visited
the winners circle with 15 big wins but none bigger than the last two
he ran Friday night.
The first big win of the night for Dailey came in the eighth when he
took Rescue Team to the wire to win the first ever Three Diamonds
Classic, an open pace for mares and fillies only, named after another
great horse trained by Riegle, Three Diamonds.
Rescue Team is a four year old mare out of the Burke Racing Stables in
Fredericktown, Pa. In her lifetime, the mare had won $112,425 and
hadn’t seen the winners circle since July 10th.
Dailey picked up win 14 for the week and was awarded the first ever,
Chip Noble Award.
Chip Noble was Jack Dailey’s mentor.
“This is truly special,” said Dailey. “The only thing that could make
this night more special would be to win the Riegle Memorial but I’m
going up against some heavy hitters.”
What Dailey spoke came true in the race that would eventually be the
show stopper.
That race came in the 10th Friday night in the third annual Gene Riegle
Memorial.
Eight of the best horses in the country went to the gate for the 30,000
dollar purse and a chance to claim the richest purse in county fair
history.
Dailey, driving Easy Again, set a blistering pace and would shave
one-fifth of a second off the old track record set by Take It Back
Terry a year ago with Ron Palone driving.
In a time of 1:52.2, Dailey crossed the wire with his second big win of
the night.
Dailey was forced to hold off Harvard’s Z Tam and Mark Winters Jr. and
third place finisher Tyber Tyke with Walter Hanes driving.
Not only was it the 15th trip to winners circle for Dailey, it was also
the second trip to that spot for the owners if Easy Again, the Burke
Stables.
Ron Burke trained both Easy Again and Rescue Team.
“We won’t both races and set a track record tonight,” said Bruce Burke.
“What else is there to do? “
With over 3,000 starters this year, Burke has had 52 percent of his
horses bring home checks with either first, second or third place
finishes. The Burke Stables has produced over 14 million dollars in
winnings this year.
“It’s only fitting that the number one stable in the country, wins the
number one trainers legacy in Gene Riegle,” said state representative
Jim Buchy.
