Greenville
hosts West Carrollton in soccer scrimmage
Young Wave team faces huge challenges
By George Starks
GREENVILLE- With a group of juniors on vacation, Greenville coach Brent
DeVoss was forced to play mostly sophomores and freshman along with
lone senior, Dylan Knoop.
With not nearly enough players to field a junior varsity team,
Greenville will have only a varsity team this season. The Wednesday
night scrimmage was proof of the challenges the Wave soccer team will
face in 2014.
Greenville allowed four goals in the opening 40 minutes against West
Carrollton.
In the final 40 minutes, the Wave played the Pirates even.
“I think the anxiety and the nerves played a lot in our play in the
first 40 minutes,” said Devoss. “We have eight sophomores and five
freshmen. We are a very young team playing against a senior squad in
West Carrollton. They (WC) has come a long way and played really,
really well tonight. Once we settled down and played our game, then it
really showed. We possessed a lot better and got our opportunities and
we’ll still work on finishing that up. I’m real happy with the way we
played.”
With only 15 kids dressed, it took DeVoss and the official on hand to
remind the Wave of one very important point.
“This was just a scrimmage,” said DeVoss. “We were being very
aggressive and that’s good but we are limited on numbers and this was a
night that we needed to learn from and I think we did learn. Everything
was a practice tonight. Even the referee was practicing tonight. We
don’t need to get too worked up about mistakes. We’ll go back to the
drawing board and get ready for our next scrimmage.”
Putting the opening 40 minutes aside, the Wave played well and it
showed in the ability to pass and attack the ball better.
“Our passes were much crisper in the second half,” said DeVoss. “We are
continually works on everything and we’re getting better skill wise.
We’re getting more fundamentally sound and we want to be a team that
truly is ready to go out and compete. We play in the GWOC and that is a
very tough conference. We have a very tough schedule for that matter.
Out of conference, we have teams like Franklin Monroe and they are no
slouch as we all know. Danny (Dicaneu) always puts a good team on the
field and you’ve always got to be prepared and ready.”
Greenville will open Saturday on the road with Cross County Conference
power, Newton.
Game time is 5 pm and is varsity only.
