Brookville in scrimmage action
Miller positive with his kids

VERSAILLES- The first scrimmage of the young football season saw the
Versailles Tigers welcome in Brookville. It was the first scrimmage of
the season for both squads and a welcomed sight for Tiger coach Adam
Miller. “It was good to go up against somebody different,” said Miller.
“It gets a little old hitting our own guys day after day. Brookville
has a strong team and the fire out hard. Brookville is a solid program
and this is a great scrimmage for us. This is a game situation and it
exposes anything that we don’t see in practice.”
With the pads and helmets on, the game day atmosphere brought one thing
to light quickly for Miller.
“We started out slow,” said Miller. “Some of that is due to the fact
that we wouldn’t be as prepared as we would for a game. As the
scrimmage wore on, we picked it up and that was something I liked.”
Miller pointed out the positives quickly.
“We were able to make adjustments out there on defense,” Miller stated.
“We started off slow and the kids picked up their intensity as we went
on.”
It’s often been said that offense wins games and defense wins
championships.
If the Tigers are going to be successful, it all starts on defense and
the ability to stop the other team. The Versailles offense must have
the ability to move the ball and put points on the board.
“On offense, it was very frustrating because we weren’t able to move
the ball at all,” said Miller. “In reality, from my point of view, we
were just a block or two away then we went down and distance and we got
a few of those blocks and things were looking a lot better. It’s just
one of those things where you’ve got to get everybody working at the
same time.”
Miller also commented on his defense.
“Defensively, we gave up some yards,” Miller admitted. “I felt like we
had some nice stops as well. We had a lot of bright spots but there
were a lot of things we need to fix also. Our mentality is we are a
bend but don’t break type of a defense. We’re not a stop…stop…stop
defense then give up a long run. We’re a team that’s going to make them
earn everything all the way down the field.”
Miller also had the luxury of seeing his junior varsity and freshman
squads.
“We have a very strong freshman and sophomore class, so it was nice to
see them compete out here as well,” said
Miller. “They have some bright spots out there but also some things
that needs worked on. At that level, they have a lot to learn.”
Versailles will scrimmage at Van Wert on Saturday starting at 6 pm.
