Lady Wave post
tie in soccer scrimmage

COLDWATER- They didn’t exactly start off like a ball of fire but the
Greenville Lady Wave ended by getting hot.
Greenville made the 27 mile trek north to scrimmage Coldwater and after
a very lackluster start, the Wave came away even with a 4-4 tie of the
Cavaliers.
Playing four 20 minute quarters, the Wave made more mistakes in the
first 20 minutes before starting to pull things together late.
Coldwater took the early lead on a penalty kick then went up 2-0 midway
through the second quarter.
“I’m not thrilled about giving up four goals,” said Greenville coach
Steve Shepard. “Two of them were cheap goals that we should have
stopped. I am very happy about scoring four goals. Coldwater is a
quality team and they played us tough.”
With one quarter in the books, Shepard pulled his team aside and
emphasized the importance of controlling the ball and not turning the
ball over.
“We made way too many mistakes in that first quarter,” said Shepard.
“We finished with some great play and the best play came from many
different players. It wasn’t just one or two kids, it was everyone. The
last quarter was a team quarter. We just worked well together.”
With the Cavs holding a 2-0 lead, Greenville started to put some plays
together and with 1:06 remaining in the second quarter, the Wave got on
the board on a shot off the foot of Ally Null.
A mere 14 seconds later, Greenville tied it up with a goal from Maddie
Shepard and the Wave started to gain some momentum.
With neither team finding the back of the net in the third, it was
Coldwater that took a 3-2 lead but the Wave would not roll over for the
MAC team.
With13:42 remaining, junior Ashton Koester got the Wave even.
That set the stage for what looked to be the winning goal for
Greenville.
With 2:09 remaining, freshman Maddie Baker found the back of the net,
giving Greenville a 4-3 advantage.
“Seeing my freshman get in there a score a huge goal for us is big for
this program,” Shepard stated. “My freshman have been playing well and
scoring for us so I’m very pleased with that.”
With 59 seconds remaining, Coldwater scored the final goal of the
night, forcing the tie with the Wave.
With only 23 kids playing and Coldwater dressing 35, the Wave were out
manned in number alone.
“We were down on the depth chart tonight,” said Shepard. “My kids were
able to hang with them and I’m reap proud of the girls. It was just a
good night tonight. We played with a lot of heart a I needed everybody
to play tonight and they stepped up. My only senior got hurt tonight
early and was taken out early in the first quarter. Everybody stepped
up and pitched in.”
The Wave will travel to West Milton next Monday for a scrimmage with
the Lady Bulldogs starting at 6 pm. Greenville will also have its
alumni game this Saturday at Harmon field starting at 5 pm.
