Lady Wave netters sweep Wayne
Greenville makes it two straight

GREENVILLE- After popping Celina Wednesday, 4-1, the home court advantage took a slight twist Thursday against the Wayne Lady Warriors.

Midway through the second set of the singles matches, a car horn was inadvertently set off forcing play to come to a halt for a short period of time.

Once that problem was taken care of, the Lady Wave tennis team went on to sweep Wayne, 5-0, in a GWOC crossover match.

The Wave went to 2-1 on the season and Greenville coach Jim Koontz was more than pleased despite losing two big players from a year ago.

“We lost a couple of players from last year in Sophia Navas-Davis (First Singles) and Michelle Borgerding (Second Singles),” said Koontz. “We are a little bit down and we lost to Beavercreek the other night, 5-0 and they are always pretty good. Our match with Van Wert was rained out and they are always pretty decent. I think we played well tonight overall.”

Greenville posted straight set victories in all its matches.

In the first doubles, junior Raquel Navas-Davis won 6-2, 6-0 while Madison Bixler rolled 6-2, 6-1 in her second doubles match.

Abbey Monnin took her third singles match with identical scores of 6-0.

In doubles action, junior Mallory Rich and her partner senior Holly Cameron posted a 6-3, 6-0 win while the second doubles team of junior Bhavneep Kaur and sophomore Molly Hunt did it with 6-1, 6-1 scores.

While the win over Wayne appeared to be quick and easy for the Wave, the win over Celina was not so easy, despite the 4-1 score.

“Celina has a really good program up there,” said Koontz. “Anytime you can beat them, you should always feel proud. The girls have been playing a lot on their own over the summer. With the re-surfacing of the courts, they played a lot at the YMCA or somewhere else, so they’ve been working at it.”

Two years ago, Greenville was forced to share the GWOC North title with Troy and Vandalia-Butler.

Last year, the Wave stood alone on top of the North Division.

Now with two of his big guns heading to collage, Koontz likes what he sees despite the young squad.

“I think Troy has to be the favorites in the North because they lost no one from last year. So they have to be the favorites,” Koontz stated. “If we can keep it going here, maybe we can sneak by them. We’ve beat them 3-2 the last three years so they are the team to beat right now.”

Being a title holder the past two years, Knootz said the Wave should be a contender again this season.

“We are getting better,” Knootz said. “We have 24 kids go out for tennis this year and that’s the most we ever had. There are 14 on the junior high team and that’s the most we ever had there. Things are looking real good.”

If the Wave are to win the North title outright, they will have to knock off the Lady Trojans. That match will be played at Greenville on Tuesday, August 26 at 4 pm.

That will be the first GWOC North match of the season.
