GREENVILLE- After starting the 2014 volleyball season off with a 0-3 start, losing to Celina, Versailles and Ft. Recovery at the Celina Invitational, Greenville turned the tables on Huber Heights Wayne Tuesday.

After dropping the opening game of the match to the Warriors, 25-13, Greenville was able to bounce back, winning three straight, 25-18, 29-27 and 25-20, to pick up win number one of the young season.

“It feels so good to get that first win,” said Wave coach Lori Davis. “We talked yesterday in practice about what is the definition of happy. Happy is victory. It is working so hard for something and you have that moment when it pays off and you know that celebration. Our kids got to experience that tonight not only as a team but as individuals. It’s a wonderful thing.”

Down 1-0 and looking at a second game deficit of 18-9 and a possible 2-0 hole, Greenville needed a rallying point.

The Wave needed someone to step up and set the table for the rest of the group.

That rally was started by senior Alyssa Baumgardner.

Baumgardner reeled off 10 straight points, including three aces, erasing a nine point Wayne lead to go up 19-18 before losing serve and making the score 19-19.

“Alyssa has amazing spring in her legs and is fearless off the serving line and the hit line,” said Davis. “She has a competitor’s heart. When you give her the ball, she wants to kill it. The team fed off her. We started off slow and we preach in practice that you just never give up. The stopped looking at the score and started playing it one point at a time. We lost the first game and we were down nine in the second but we got the momentum back on our side of the net and kept it there. We talk in practice how momentum is like a cloud and we need to keep that cloud on our side of the floor. If you have that kind of visualization to know when it shifts you can pull yourself back together and that’s exactly what they did.”

After winning the second game, 25-18, Greenville waged war with the Warriors in game three and again, had to come from being down 18-8 to pull out an amazing 29-27 victory to go up 2-1.

Needing only one more win, the Wave never trailed in the fourth despite Wayne getting things kn otted up several times in the game.

It was the ability to reach deep into their respective hearts, breaking a 20-20 deadlock to win 25-20.

“They had the ability to find what they needed to put this match away,” said Davis. “The never gave up and held on when they needed to.”

It was a combination of good back row play and solid net play that would eventually wear the Warriors down.

“We took control of this match tonight in that second and third game and never let go,” Davis stated. “We played with heart and played like a team that wanted to win. We played some amazing competition this weekend and these girls knew that our offense wasn’t as strong as those others but we battled and they learned from it. Tonight, the learned from it. They left it all out there on the court and it paid off tonight.”

Now 1-3 on the season, Greenville will host Fairborn tonight in another GWOC crossover match.
